This photo still makes me tear up. 💔

That’s my son Gavin at 3 years old with our very first dog, Hershey, a chocolate Standard Poodle. We brought her home at 16 weeks old… and by then, the critical 3–16 week socialization window was already closing.

I didn’t know any better at the time—I hadn’t gone through formal training yet. But because Hershey missed that early window, she spent her whole life leading with fear. She even had accidents whenever guests walked through the door.

👉 A UC Davis study of 5,000+ puppies found that those who began socialization just a week after their first vaccine did not get sick. The bigger risk is waiting too long—and missing that chance forever.

Hershey’s struggles inspired my mission: to help Doodles everywhere get the confident start they deserve—and to support families whose pups had rocky beginnings.

That’s why I sat down with Jane Messineo Lindquist, founder of Puppy Culture, to clear up the myths about vaccines & socialization.
