Meet the hardest workers at Dreher Beetle Bone Co. These are dermestid beetles and have been the trusted choice of taxidermist for decades when it comes to cleaning skulls. They remove flesh while preserving the delicate bone structure that can be damaged by boiling.

This 30 second time-lapse covers 30 minutes of feeding. There are thousands of beetles in this enclosure and given the right environment they will continue reproducing at a rapid rate.

Have you ever seen a dermestid beetle? They’re naturally found throughout PA, but most people don’t realize they’re sharing their backyard with them.

Degreasing is the most important step in creating a quality European mount, but it’s also the step that’s the most overlooked.

Every whitetail skull is different, but most require 3–6 weeks of degreasing to completely remove oils from the bone. If that process is cut short, grease will eventually work its way back to the surface, causing the skull to develop yellow or tan discoloration over time.

Boiling may be faster, but it’s not better. High temperatures can drive grease deeper into the bone, making it much harder to remove completely. The result is a skull that may look great today but develops yellow grease stains months or even years later.

The picture below shows the difference between a properly degreased skull and one that still contained grease.
