One of the shelters wonderful volunteers took Evertrust home as a foster

Evertrust came into the shelter over a year ago and hadn’t left his kennel in all that time. I had been working with him, but our biggest accomplishment was getting him out of his kennel and right back in. The world was simply too scary for him. It broke my heart knowing that he was spending his entire adolescent year staring at the same four walls.
So I decided to foster him. The goal was to give him a break from the kennel and hopefully help him come out of his shell. And BOY, did he surprise me!!
What was supposed to be an overnight foster turned into TWO WEEKS, and I got to discover the dog hiding behind all that fear.
Here is what I learned:
🐾 He is hands down the MOST dog-friendly dog I’ve ever fostered (and he’s my 7th foster!). He instantly became best friends with Neo and Rudy.
🐾 He learned to WALK on a leash, get the zoomies, and PLAY WITH TOYS! Imagine discovering all these things for the first time!
🐾 He is crate trained! Slept in his bigger crate during the day and all night. Initially, he’d protest because apparently being with the humans was a much better option. But once the lights went out, he knew it was bedtime and didn’t make a peep!
🐾 He is ALMOST house-trained, with only 3 accidents in two weeks.
🐾 He didn’t get into things he wasn’t supposed to and understood corrections.
🐾 Once he trusts you, he is incredibly affectionate.
🐾 He would absolutely thrive in a home with another confident, friendly dog. He wanted to do EVERYTHING Neo and Rudy did. They were his little instruction manuals for navigating this big, scary world!
When I brought him back to the shelter, I worried he might regress. Thankfully, he didn’t! Today, he’s walking out of his kennel ON HIS OWN and meeting new people during outings with his partner-in-crime, Pinnacle (O/BH).
Let that sink in. A month ago, this was a dog who wouldn’t leave his kennel. Today, he’s discovering the world!
FOSTERING CHANGES LIVES. Sometimes, all a dog needs is a chance to experience life outside the shelter, a little patience, some canine friends, and someone willing to believe in them.
If you’ve ever debated fostering a shelter dog, consider this your sign. You don’t have to adopt to change a life. You just have to open your home temporarily.
Evertrust would like to remind you that there is a whole world beyond those four kennel walls. And he’d really like to keep exploring it with a family of his own.
