🐾 It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’re celebrating the incredible humans who help make every day a little brighter for the dogs and cats in our care! 🧡

Our volunteers are truly the heart of our shelter — showing up rain or shine to walk dogs, cuddle cats, fold endless loads of laundry, help at events, clean kennels when we're short-staffed, and even come in on holidays when the shelter is closed (you should see those parking lots!). From hands-on help to behind-the-scenes support from afar, we couldn't do this lifesaving work without them.

Naturally, we needed someone photogenic to help us spread the word—and who better than Booker? This pup literally can’t take a bad picture, so he was the obvious choice to be our spokespup for this post. 📸🐶

This week, we’re inviting our amazing volunteers to share a photo or video of a favorite pet who’s currently at the shelter. These animals hold a special place in their hearts — and maybe yours, too?

Our carnival-themed, family-friendly event is coming up on May 3rd, and it’s all about helping us get ready for the whirlwind of kitten season. To set the scene with all the festive flair it deserves, we’ve put together a Wish List to make it easy for you to pitch in.

🐱🐶📅 - From scared and shut down to snuggled up and thriving—Sandy & Sullivan’s transformation is what friendship is all about. 💛

These two came in separately as part of a cruelty case and were struggling… until we put them back together. Sandy (1 yr black kitty with gorgeous amber eyes) is a sweet, chatty biscuit-maker who lives for his best friend Sullivan (8 yrs silver fox with stunning jade green eyes). Sullivan? He’s gaining confidence daily, especially if there are head or chin scratches involved.

They’re bonded, healing, and oh-so-lovable. They’ve been through a lot—and now, they’re ready to go home. Together. 🐾

🐶🐱📅 - 🚨 Big News: We found the world’s largest baked potato. His name is Papi. 🍠🐾

Papi is 99 pounds of pure chill. At 9 years old, this laid-back legend came to us as a lost dog, and while we’re still getting to know him, the volunteers already adore him. One even described him as “a four-legged baked potato,” and honestly... they nailed it.

He enjoys sunbathing, sniffing the breeze, and just vibing. If you're 65 or older, you can adopt this potato pup for free through our Seniors For Seniors program. 🧓❤️🐶

🎉🐾 Barley Boo, Animal Shelter Superhero, reporting for duty! 💥

This courageous canine comes fully equipped with heroic sidekicks like a teddy bear, a braided rope, and a heart of gold. But even superheroes need a break—our shelter will be closed this Sunday (April 20) so our team can enjoy Easter with their families. 🐣💛

💫 The good news? You still have time to meet the real-life Barley Boo (and his fellow heroes)! We’re open noon–6pm through Saturday and back to regular hours on Monday.

FriYay means it's time for a !

Meet Agatha, a sweetheart with a mysterious past. Just like an Agatha Christie novel, no one knows what adventures she had before arriving at the shelter. What we do know is that she is ready for her next chapter with a loving family.

At 6 years old and 55 pounds, Agatha is the perfect size for snuggling-one of her favorite things. She is currently in a foster home, where she has been the perfect houseguest. Her foster describes her as house-trained, well-mannered, and eager to please. She knows sit, shake, stay, and her name. She enjoys going for walks, but she is just as happy lounging on the couch. While she is not a fan of the kennel, she does great when left out and has not chewed a thing.

Agatha is a super sweet and friendly girl who is ready to be the leading lady in her own story. If you are looking for a loyal companion who will be by your side through every chapter of life, Agatha is the perfect match.

🚨 It’s Animal Services Appreciation Week, aka the perfect time to celebrate the squad that keeps this shelter running, thriving, and surviving on caffeine and animal snuggles. ☕🐾

Together, our team has racked up 159 years and 10 months of lifesaving work. That’s a lot of p**p scooped, treats handed out, and happy tails wagging. And they’ve done it all with heart, hustle, and a healthy dose of badassery. 💪💛

To celebrate, we asked each staff member to pick their favorite shelter pet (yes, it was hard), and we put them all into a video that’s equal parts adorable and emotionally devastating in the best way.

✨ Want to make a staff member cry happy tears? Come adopt their favorite pet! It’s the highest compliment. Plus, you’ll be a hero.

"We adopted Nathan on March 15th. We are so happy to have him as a part of our family. He has most definitely made himself at home. He enjoys playing with his sister, Oakley, and will play with almost every toy possible. He and his sister go to the dog park almost every day and enjoying chasing each other around for a while. He has started to show his personality more and more. He is a momma's boy and is always waiting for me to come home from work and will jump up to lick my face once home. He is even a great at helping me with my college homework. We are so grateful to be able to give this boy a home and we are so thankful for the shelter to allow us to adopt such a wonderful boy."

Daww, look at him! He's clearly loving the good life in a home of his own, and we couldn't be happier for Nathan and his family. Thank you for the pupdate & thank you for adopting!

🌮🐾 A huge shoutout to the amazing Jarrell Women’s Social Group for going above and beyond for the shelter pets! This powerhouse group hosted a taco sale AND a 5K fundraiser, and thanks to their big hearts (and maybe a little taco-fueled motivation), they raised $1,500 and gathered a fantastic haul of goodies for the dogs and cats in our care.

About our page

WCRAS accepts all animals from within our jurisdiction regardless of health, age, temperament whether there is space or not. Adoptions and owner reclaims are vital for the shelter to continue to save at least 90% of the animals that enter the shelter. Currently WCRAS has been saving 90% or more for over three years. We only euthanize for medical that no longer have a good quality of life, or for behavior issues that make the animal unsafe to place in a home. WCRAS also relies on donations to pay for all the medical illness and/or injuries that come into the shelter. Without that support, all these animals would have to be euthanized. Thank you for sharing the animals in need of homes and supporting WCRAS!
