The Humane Society was incorporated on April 30, 1973, to relieve suffering and to enhance the lives of animals through humane and educational services to the residents of our community. Initially an organization without an actual facility, the Humane Society was housed in a number of different locations. January 2, 2008, the Humane Society cut the ribbon on its new 14,000 square-foot Pet Rescue a

nd Adoption Center. The Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center serves as a center for pet adoptions and also provides animal control sheltering services for the cities of Gadsden and Attalla. The Society houses animals brought in by the public, strays, and all animals brought in by animal control officers in the contracted municipalities, including animals involved in cruelty cases. The HSPRAC employs an Executive Director and staff, and is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The HSPRAC also relies on hundreds of volunteers throughout the community who assist with programs and fund-raising. Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center programs include educational outreach through school programs, and youth volunteer programs. Community outreach programs including spay and neuter programs, bite prevention education, and pet health care education; community awareness events including Pawsapalooza Benefit Concert, Howloweenie Parade and the Reindeer Run. As many of you know by now…
On November 7th, our world was turned upside down.
We took in a ton of dogs from a hoarding situation.

It’s never our place to judge — it’s our job to love, to heal, and to give these souls a chance at life. And that’s what we’re doing… even as our hearts break and our shelter overflows.

We are begging — pleading — praying for any reputable rescues to step forward. These babies have already endured so much. They don’t deserve to be scared and stressed in crowded kennels. They deserve soft beds, gentle hands, and a place where they can finally breathe.

Our staff is exhausted but we will not give up. We will keep showing up. We will keep loving them like they’re our own. Because they deserve everything.

To everyone who has helped — who’s donated, shared, or simply checked in — thank you. You are keeping us going through one of the hardest months we’ve ever faced.

Please… if you can help, reach out. If you can’t, please share. Every single share, every rescue connection, every ounce of compassion matters right now.

This handsome boy is Asteroid, and he has been with us for 82 long days — our longest cat resident. 💔

We can’t understand why he keeps getting overlooked… he is pure love. Asteroid is incredibly affectionate, playful, and the kind of cat who just melts into you the moment you give him attention. He’s got that gentle, old-soul sweetness mixed with a silly, curious streak that makes him impossible not to adore.

And if you’re looking for the perfect inside–outside companion, he’s your guy. He’ll snuggle you inside, explore outside, and yes… he’ll gladly handle any mice problems you might have. 😉

Asteroid deserves a home where his little heart can finally rest. Please consider giving this sweet boy the chance he’s been waiting 82 days for. 🖤🐾

💔 We’re in desperate need of dog food and newspaper right now💔

Our shelves are almost empty, and our dogs are still looking up at us with hungry eyes, trusting that we’ll take care of them. We never want to fail them — but we truly need help.

💔🐾 73 days. That’s how long sweet Mud Cake has been waiting… watching families walk past her kennel, hoping one day it would finally be her turn.

But today, we have some amazing news — Mud Cake’s adoption has been completely sponsored!! 🥹💖 That means her vaccines, microchip, and spay are all covered. There’s no adoption fee for this precious girl — just a chance at a forever home.

Mud Cake is heartworm positive, but please don’t let that stop you. With monthly prevention and love, she can live a long, happy life — the kind of life she’s been dreaming about for 73 long days.

Helen is an 8–9 year old gentle soul who may not see or hear the world like other cats, but she feels love just the same. In fact, she adores it. She’s calm, affectionate, and just wants a cozy home where she can spend her golden years being cherished.

Mill Mill was adopted today!🐾

We’re so happy she has found her furever home. And we wanted to say thank you again to the foster family that took Mill Mill in when we needed a bottle feeder. She was so itty bitty when she came into the shelter.

Now she’s healthy and thriving. And we know this little girl is going to keep Mill Mill busy!
