Update 7/4: pending foster-to-adopt

Keira is a beautiful young girl who is struggling to cope with the overwhelming shelter environment. Found as a stray, she’s still trying to make sense of the constant noise, unfamiliar faces, and stressful surroundings. While she may seem intimidating from inside her kennel, the moments she’s given a little space tell a very different story.
Away from the kennel, Keira walks nicely on leash, enjoys treats, & shows a much calmer side. In playgroup, she chose to avoid conflict rather than seek it out, preferring to keep to herself & politely communicate when she needed a little extra personal space. She wasn’t looking for trouble.. she was simply asking other dogs to respect her boundaries. She would rather avoid confrontation than create it.
The kennel has become the place where Keira feels she has to protect herself. Staff have noted that she barks, shows her teeth, & lunges when people approach her kennel door, but even during those interactions, she’ll wag her tail & happily accept treats once she realizes no one is forcing her. Those mixed signals are common in fearful dogs who desperately want to trust, but don’t yet feel safe enough to do so.
Keira is also heartworm positive, but DAS will provide free treatment & it isn’t contagious to other dogs. What she needs is a quiet furever or foster home where she can finally decompress, build confidence at her own pace, & learn that people can be trusted again.
With patience, consistency, & understanding, Keira has every chance to become an incredibly loyal companion. She just needs someone willing to look beyond the kennel & see the frightened dog underneath.
