All-around performances include a minimum of four events: Ranch, Trail, Reining, Pleasure, and Cow Work. To place well in the all-around, riders must perform consistently across all classes, with an average of 25 riders competing in each class. Point margins between the top competitors are often very small — sometimes just a single point or less.

While it’s common to settle cows for the cutting pen, I often also settle my cows in the outdoor pen at least once in their rotation. I want my younger horses and my amateur riders to have a great experience with a cow that knows how to follow the fence, stop, and honor the horse. As their skills improve we work more unpredictable and pushy cattle.

Over time, I’ve found it’s helpful to put cattle out through different gates in the arena. That way, the cows are always looking for the next out and constantly searching along the fence to find the open gate. It’s a great way to get more life out of them.

There are a lot of great trainers who handle their cattle differently. This is just one approach I’ve found that keeps my cows fresh and gives our non-pros the best works possible.
