Meet Dr. Courtney E. North, internal medicine specialist at Animal Cancer Care Clinic. Dr. North brings extensive global clinical and teaching experience to her role, with advanced training from the University of Pennsylvania, The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, and Michigan State University.

Her career has taken her across the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, where she has cared for patients, taught veterinary professionals, and trained veterinary nurses. She has also donated her expertise to nonprofit organizations around the world, supporting animals ranging from dogs and cats to elephants, goats, chickens, and zoo animals.

What is electrochemotherapy, and how can it help pets with cancer?

This treatment uses brief electrical pulses to help chemotherapy enter cancer cells more effectively. It is often used for visible tumors near the skin, surgical scars and tumors that could not be fully removed through surgery.

Pets are sedated for a few minutes during the procedure, and the treatment itself is not painful. Depending on your pet’s diagnosis, electrochemotherapy may also be combined with other therapies as part of a personalized, multi-modality treatment plan.

This innovative technology, originally developed for human cancer care, is available for select veterinary cancer cases at our Melbourne location.

Dr. Lyons helps lead advanced radiation therapy care for pets facing cancer, bringing years of specialized training and experience to Animal Cancer Care Clinic. Since joining ACCC in 2021, he has supported pets and their families through highly personalized radiation planning and treatment.

Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Lyons is also an inventor, backyard carpenter, and author of Survivor: The Dog Days of Cancer, a heartfelt story about a dog going through cancer treatment.
