Why we chose quartz sand (and why it matters for your horse) 🏟️🔬
Great footing isn't just about what you see on top. Here's what went into our indoor arena:
1️⃣ It starts with the base
Before any sand went in, we leveled and compacted the base. A firm, even base is the foundation of good footing: it keeps the sand at a consistent depth, prevents soft spots and low patches, and gives every stride the same support from one end of the arena to the other.
2️⃣ Then the sand: quartz
Not all arena sand is created equal. Quartz is one of the hardest natural minerals, so it holds up under thousands of hoofbeats instead of breaking down into fine dust like softer sands. That means:
✅ Less dust for horse and rider lungs
✅ Angular grains that lock together for stable, supportive footing with just enough cushion
✅ Better drainage and more consistent footing over time
✅ Footing that lasts for years, not seasons
3️⃣ Why it matters
Consistent, well-built footing supports joints, tendons and hooves. As a vet student and equine osteopath, I see firsthand how much footing affects soundness. Your horse's comfort starts from the ground up.
