✨Mini-Series: Free-Choice Hay✨

A horse’s digestive system is designed for near-constant grazing, which is why we prioritize free-choice, high-quality hay for every horse at GreenAcres Equine.

When horses have consistent access to forage, we commonly see:
• Improved digestion
• Reduced stress and anxiety
• Healthier gut function
• Fewer behavioral issues

🌱 Supporting natural eating patterns is one of the simplest—and most effective—ways we help horses feel calm, balanced, and comfortable in their bodies. We use hay bonnets with hay nets to protect hay from the elements while also encouraging the slow, steady intake that mimics natural grazing.

🔬 Forage quality matters, which is why we test our hay through Equi-Analytical, one of the leading hay analysis services available. This allows owners to make nutrition decisions based on data rather than guesswork.

🌱 Did you know?
A horse’s stomach produces acid continuously and is relatively small compared to the rest of the digestive tract. Saliva helps buffer that acid, but saliva production depends on chewing. When horses lack consistent access to forage, the risk of gastric ulcers and colic increases significantly. Constant access to appropriate, high-quality forage is one of the most important foundations of good equine health.

What are some other management practices you’ve found make a meaningful difference for horse health?

As we settle into February, we’re sharing a few updates focused on keeping barn flow smooth, along with a link to a feedback form to help us better understand busy times around the facility. This month’s newsletter includes shared space etiquette, information on how to report safety concerns, and an update on Sarah’s availability this month. We’ve also made a couple of updates to our pricing structure, including the addition of a pasture maintenance fee. Good land care is part of good horse care 🌱🐎

At GreenAcres Equine, we believe horses thrive when their foundational needs are well supported. Growth—whether in soundness, performance, or longevity—never happens in isolation.

🐴 No hoof, no horse.
Sound hooves are the foundation of everything a horse does, from high-level performance to comfortable daily movement.

We’re grateful to work with a skilled group of farriers using a wide range of approaches, including:
• Barefoot care
• Composite and traditional shoeing
• Advanced therapeutic options

This allows us to thoughtfully support a diverse herd—from competitive athletes to pregnant mares to laminitic mini ponies.

Boarders at GreenAcres are always welcome to work with the farrier of their choice. We’ve also developed a trusted list of preferred farriers we collaborate with regularly who value communication, adaptability, and individualized care.

One of those farriers is Emily Heiney of Emily’s Equine Services. Her anatomy-based approach and experience with barefoot and composite options supports both performance and rehabilitation horses. We consistently see horses benefit from her calm presence and whole-body understanding of hoof health.

Good care is a team effort.
We’re grateful for the farriers who help keep the horses at GreenAcres comfortable, sound, and thriving.

👇 Give your farrier a shout-out in the comments—we love celebrating good hoof care.
