Well it’s a wrap on county fairs and all the kids did an amazing job. In Boulder County all of our clients won a grand championship in addition to many class wins and great memories for all of us. I’ll be sharing other fair results soon and we’re excited to be preparing for Colorado State Fair in a couple of weeks! I always remember courage youth riders to check out 4-H and all the opportunities it offers. It’s one of my favorite ways to get kids more involved in the community and in riding horses.

I know it’s been forever since I’ve posted so I thought I’d give a quick explanation for my break. I had the opportunity to marry my soulmate last week and was wrapped up in preparation for that followed by an amazing honeymoon that I am still enjoying. I will be back to work and regular posting on July 3. Thank you all for understanding and I hope you’ve all been able to get some amazing rides in the meantime! See you soon!

We had another great weekend at the Heart of the Rockies Quarter Horse Show. Amber and Peaches came away with the L1 ranch riding circuit champion and multiple placings in the top 5 in amateur ranch riding as well! Joslin and Tuna received multiple top 5 placings as well and had a great show continuing their journey of getting to know each other. Teaghan and Tuna were able to win the circuit champion in the ranch on the rail class and place top 5 in the senior ranch riding. We’re so proud of our amazing clients and so excited to see what they achieve all year. Keep up the great work Amber and Joslin!

It’s often very difficult to show a nervous horse or one that has had bad experiences. We often let our own emotions and fears get in the way of letting the horse learn a new environment. To me it’s important to push the horse out around the make up pen and the show pen as if you’re riding at home. As soon as you start acting differently, your horse will pick up on it and get worse. I want to be sure I’m changing direction on my horse frequently to keep their attention focused on me. One of my favorite exercises for this is a serpentine. I like to take my horse to the end of the pen, start in the middle and ask my horse to jog a half circle left, followed immediately by a half circle right. This keeps my horse in frame and thinking about my cues while they move across the whole arena. Once they are soft, quiet and listening to me, I’ll move them up to the lope and do the same thing without changing leads. This makes my horse hold themselves upright and think a lot during the counter canter, followed by a release/reward of turning back into the correct lead. By focusing on keeping my horse’s attention instead of wondering what they’ll spook at, I’ve given my horse something productive and positive to focus on. This allows them to put distractions aside and later realize they aren’t that scary. Once my horse begins to relax I want to let them stretch their head and neck and feel rewarded for being quiet. As always, comment with questions!

Last week Malibu got to help out with a very special birthday party! After some pony rides, the kids got to enjoy painting on her beautiful coat and giving her plenty of kisses and carrots. She absolutely loved the attention! What an awesome 3 year old!!

The next clinic in my Practical Horsemanship series is going to be a unique one! After learning some new skills and practicing in a controlled environment, we’re heading out into the real world to enjoy Colorado’s beautiful spring with our horses. If you’ve been itching to get out on the trail for the first time, for the first time in a long time, or even not for the first time at all, let me help you hit the trail with confidence.

With the weather warming up and the days getting longer, hair is flying off of horses everywhere. But did you know that the warmer temperatures have nothing to do with the spring shed? The amount of daylight is the only thing that triggers a horse to shed its coat. That’s why keeping horses under artificial lights in the winter keeps them slick!

As the weather warms up and summer descends on us, many people ask me how to prepare for trail riding. I firmly believe that the foundation fit a good trail horse is built in the arena and finished in the open on a trail. Before I take my horses on trail they have to pass a series of simple tests:
1. Can they stop off of your legs alone?
2. Can they sidepass efficiently both ways?
3. Can they back up straight and in a circle each way?
4. Will they contain themselves in a spook (will they just look and maybe jump sideways or do they completely lose it)?
5. Can you regain attention in 10 seconds after a spook?
6. Does your horse ground tie?
By using these tests you can minimize the risk of a serious accident on the trail and you have the tools to move their body away from danger quickly, quietly and without a fight. All these requirements may seem overkill but I would always rather have a horse that’s tuned in with me and that I trust deeply before I decide to take them into the unpredictable. Stay tuned to my blog on the website to see the in depth reasons for my checklist and how to get your horse to ace the list before you hit the trail. Also if you’re local, check out our trail riding clinic that I will be putting on the first weekend of May. As always please comment or message with questions! Happy trails this spring!
