Merle Ocular Dysgenesis (MOD) is a hereditary condition present from birth, most often seen in dogs with a double merle (double dapple) genetic pattern.

Dogs with MOD may have small or underdeveloped eyes, abnormal irises or pupils, cataracts, and retinal or optic nerve defects like poor development or detachment. The double merle gene can also affect hearing, and some MOD dogs are born deaf.

Because the eye doesn't develop correctly before birth, multiple eye structures can be affected ranging from mild abnormalities to complete blindness.

MOD is linked to breeds like Australian Shepherds, Dachshunds, Great Danes, Old English Sheepdogs, American Foxhounds, and Catahoula Leopard Dogs, though mixed-breed dogs can be affected too.

Eyelid agenesis is a birth defect most often seen in cats, where a portion of the eyelid, usually the outer part of the upper eyelid, fails to form. This can leave the eye overly exposed or cause hairs to rub against the eye's surface, leading to irritation. Corneal ulceration, scarring, and chronic irritation are common in kittens with this condition. 🐱

Treatment depends on severity:

- Mild cases can sometimes be managed with topical lubricating medications. If just a few hairs are rubbing the eye, cryotherapy or thermocautery can remove the offending hair follicles.

- In severe cases, surgery is recommended to recreate a functional upper eyelid with a hairless margin to protect the eye long term.

👁️ Ever heard of a dermoid? It's a congenital spot of normal skin tissue that ends up in an abnormal spot on the eye, like the eyelid margin, the conjunctiva, or even the surface of the eye itself.

Since it's skin tissue, it often grows hairs over time, just like skin elsewhere on the body. The hairs may get longer, but the lesion itself doesn't grow larger.

Dermoids can cause squinting, tearing, corneal ulcers, and discomfort. Most require surgical excision and don't grow back after removal. Pets typically spend a week to ten days in a cone collar afterward, plus seven days of topical antibiotics.
