Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈, and for that, we would like to talk about a very special boy.

Atticus had his very first appointment with us back in February 2013 and, recently, his very last appointment with us just two months ago. We were lucky enough to care for Atticus throughout his entire life. Around the clinic, we liked to refer to him as “the deer” because of his long, leggy body! 🦌

Atticus began having issues with swallowing, licking his lips, and a shaking jaw. Upon examination, we found a mass on the roof of his mouth. A biopsy of the mass unfortunately revealed that it was a soft tissue sarcoma.

Atticus began traveling to Greenville, SC, for radiation treatments at Upstate Vet. After a very brave fight, Atticus eventually crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Atticus was an incredibly lovable guy who lived for playing fetch and spending time with his family. He was a wonderful hiking and traveling buddy, too. His mom says he was truly the definition of man’s best friend and will be missed beyond measure by his humans.

His mom also told us that Atticus simply cannot be replaced, but if they do eventually decide to welcome another pet into their family, we’ll have the privilege of caring for them, too. ❤️

We feel incredibly lucky to have known Atticus for all these years and to have been trusted with his care from his very first appointment to his last.

Today, we remember Atticus and all of the beloved pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

“My hope for the environment, for all things living, and all things good, just nature in general, that we should pay more attention to how we’re treating our mountains, how we’re treating our world, how we’re just treating everything.” — Dolly Parton

We are so saddened to hear of the loss of an Appalachian legend. Not only was she an amazing human who did so much for so many, but she also had an incredible love for animals and the natural world.

Dolly and Dollywood partnered with the American Eagle Foundation to create Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, which provided a home for bald eagles who were permanently disabled and unable to survive in the wild. Through their decades long conservation partnership, the American Eagle Foundation has successfully released more than 400 bald eagles back into the wild, contributing to the incredible recovery of the species.

She also started a pet apparel and toy company where a portion of the proceeds went to a Tennessee animal rescue that offers refuge for pets and other domesticated animals that are homeless or neglected. 🐾

Her businesses have also supported conservation efforts and helped bring attention to the importance of protecting pollinators and the natural beauty of the Appalachian region. 🦋

Dolly leaves behind so much more than an incredible musical legacy. Her compassion for people, animals, and the beautiful mountains she called home will continue to make an impact for generations.

Say hello to Bubba James! Not to be confused with Bubba Gump. He unfortunately does not own a shrimp boat, but we would support him in his venture if he was so inclined. 🦐 We did however distract him with Forest Gump quotes while we drew his blood. He didn’t seem to get our jokes. 😔

Bubba came in last week for his annual exam and to have some new bumps checked out! He did great for his exam and got plenty of smooches from the back staff.

Thanks for coming to see us, Bubba! We loved having you! 🐾

Meet Pepper! 🍓 She’s a big, gentle soul with the cutest strawberry bandana and a BIG bark! She came to see us recently for some vomiting.

Dr. Golden gave her a thorough exam and made sure her gums weren’t tacky. Tacky or dry feeling gums can be one sign of dehydration, which is something we always want to check when a pet has been vomiting.

Pepper was an absolute sweetheart for her visit and made it very easy for us to check her over! 😊 We hope she feels better soon!

Happy World Photography Day! 📸

Last week on Facebook, we asked y’all to post your best professional grade looking photos of your pets, and you definitely delivered! It was hard to choose, but these are our top 3 favorites! 🏆 (As much as we love our staff’s pets, we decided to eliminate them from this challenge.)

1. Khali
Khali will be 8 this fall! Her nickname is Bear. She was born on a farm after an accidental romance between two neighboring dogs. Her mom was a German Shepherd and her dad was a Black Lab!

Khali loves anything involving water… but absolutely hates a bath. 🛁 She loves fetching sticks and soccer balls, and her favorite words are “ride,” “squirrel,” and “outside.” She’s incredibly gentle with her new human sister and looks forward to sharing whipped cream desserts with her brother, Vegas! She also enjoys barking at animals on TV and howling along with passing fire trucks. 🚒

2. Tortellini
Tortellini is a Hermann’s tortoise who had a bit of a rough start with us after developing pneumonia. Thanks to the help of Dr. McMullan, she’s come a long way and is now fully recovered! 🐢

She’s feisty, will gladly eat ALL the clover in the yard! Her favorite food is dandelion greens, so don’t you dare serve dinner without them… or else!

3. Frankie
Frankie was hit by a car when she was younger and had to undergo a couple of surgeries to save her leg. She’s now living her best life near Asheville!

When she’s able, Frankie loves hiking, playing at the dog park, and enjoying the great outdoors! ⛰️

Thank you to everyone who shared photos with us! We absolutely loved getting to see all of your photogenic pets. Happy World Photography Day! 📸

Happy National Black Cat Appreciation Day! 🖤🐈‍⬛

This day aims to raise awareness and dispel myths about black cats being bad luck!

Did you know black cats usually stay in shelters longer than other colored cats? If you’re looking for a new kitty companion, consider adopting a black kitty! 🖤

Say hello to Poppy! 👋 Poppy doesn’t come see us much because she’s a relatively healthy girl! We had to text her momma to send us some of her best pictures so we could show her off!

She enjoys supervised outdoor time, where she loves chasing insects and chewing on grass. She also loves stealing objects that don’t belong to her….kinda like a cat in crow form. 🐦‍⬛ Laying in sinks may also be one of her favorite hobbies!

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day to all the black kitties out there!

We would like to wish Amy a very happy, wonderful birthday!

We love her for so many reasons! She loves to brush out your pets’ hair after they wake up from a dental cleaning (because they often wake up looking like they had a rough night 😂), and she never misses an opportunity to smooch on a Golden Retriever.

We hope your day is filled with adorable pets, antique trinket shopping, and the addition of a few new houseplants! 🪴

We love you so much, Amy! Happy Birthday!

Happy World Lizard Day!
Itchy is looking a bit dusty! 🦎 (Our hospital pet!)

Do you know what this means? It means she’s gonna shed soon! Leopard geckos generally shed their skin every 4–6 weeks, and then they commonly eat it as a snack. 🤣

During this time, Itchy starts hanging out in her humid hide more, rubbing against objects, getting a little less energetic, and sometimes completely stops eating. This is all completely normal!

We commonly see leopard geckos with missing toes. This is usually because they had stuck shed around a toe at some point, which can cut off circulation and eventually cause the toe to fall off completely.

Making sure your gecko has a humid place to hide while shedding is SUPER important! Something as simple as a Tupperware container with a hole cut into the side and filled with moist sphagnum moss works perfectly for this!

And don’t forget to check those toes after a shed to make sure no skin was left behind!
