His goal was to establish an equine practice that provides exceptional veterinary care, while building client relationships and enhancing the bond between horses and the people who care for them. 🎉We would like everyone to give a warm welcome to our newest team member🎉 Netta was hired in the beginning of July as our new Equine Vet Technician ✨ You may see Netta with Dr Greene or riding around with Madi and Dr Frederick in the truck to Appointments!!! Netta Crombie grew up in Western Massachusetts where she fell in love with horses at the age of 5. She learned from a young age that dirty work was the backbone of owning and riding horses, and was never too shy to spend a day riding the heels of the barn owner - mucking stalls, wrapping legs, cleaning tack - even if it meant she didn’t get any actual time in the saddle. Her passion stemmed from the overall care of the horse, and taking the best care of them that is possible. She went to Cazenovia College for a degree in Equine Business Management, and went on to become a manager at different reputable boarding and training barns in the Hudson Valley. She is continuously aiming to gain more knowledge in the equine field, and can be seen in her free time with her personal horse, Peanut, or playing with her dog, Dahlia.

Rabies Awareness for Horse Owners 🐴🦇

A recently confirmed case of rabies in a horse here in New York is a good reminder that while rabies is uncommon in horses, it can happen.

Rabies is spread through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to help protect your horse.

✔️ Keep your horse up to date on their rabies vaccination—it’s considered a core vaccine and is recommended annually.
✔️ Minimize contact between horses and wildlife by securing feed and limiting wildlife access to barns and pastures.
✔️ If your horse has an unexplained wound or may have been bitten by wildlife, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
✔️ Be aware of sudden changes in behavior, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained neurologic signs, and seek veterinary attention immediately if you have concerns.

Rabies remains rare, but prevention is simple and highly effective. Staying current on vaccinations is the best way to protect your horse, your family, and everyone who interacts with your animals.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we wish you, your families, and your horses a fun and safe holiday weekend.

Please note that Advanced Equine will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, so our team can enjoy the holiday. However, as always, our veterinarians will be on call all weekend for equine emergencies, 24/7.

If you’re celebrating with your horses, remember to keep them comfortable during fireworks by providing a safe, familiar environment and planning ahead if your horse is sensitive to loud noises.

🇺🇸 Fourth of July Reminder: Planning Ahead Matters 🐴🎆

Fireworks can be a significant source of stress and anxiety for some horses. Trazodone is a prescription medication that veterinarians may recommend to help reduce anxiety and promote calm behavior in horses that are sensitive to loud noises or other stressful events.

Trazodone works by affecting serotonin levels in the brain, helping horses remain calmer without acting as a general anesthetic. Because every horse responds differently, it should only be used under veterinary guidance, and it’s best to do a trial dose before the holiday rather than giving it for the first time on the night of the fireworks.

If your horse has struggled with fireworks in the past, now is the time to contact Advanced Equine to discuss whether trazodone is an appropriate option.

☀️ Extreme heat is on the way—help keep your horses safe! 🐴💧

Hot weather can quickly take a toll on our equine partners. A few simple precautions can make all the difference:

💦 Provide unlimited access to clean, fresh water.
🧂 Make sure your horse has access to electrolytes if they’re sweating heavily or working.
🌳 Offer plenty of shade and good ventilation.
🌅 Ride during the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible.
🌡️ Watch closely for signs of heat stress, including excessive sweating (or not sweating at all), rapid breathing, lethargy, weakness, elevated heart rate, or reluctance to move.

If your horse shows signs of overheating, stop exercise immediately, move them to a shaded area, begin cooling with water, and contact your veterinarian if they don’t improve quickly.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy a safe summer with your horses! ❤️🐎

You may have heard recent discussions about the New World Screwworm? While they have been in the southern US so far, it’s always a good idea to stay informed.

The New World Screwworm is a fly whose larvae can affect open wounds in animals, making proper wound care and routine health checks especially important.

As horse owners, some simple steps can help keep your horse healthy:
✔️ Check your horse daily for cuts or wounds
✔️ Keep wounds clean and monitored
✔️ Contact your veterinarian if a wound appears unusual or isn’t healing properly
