Saving Lives at Both Ends of the Leash These two groups have a commonality: the desperate need for hope. Most remarkably, each has the power to heal the other.

300,000 veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are currently struggling with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and/or TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). These illnesses are devastating: 18 veterans commit suicide every 24-hours.

5-7 million companion animals enter shelters every year in this country. 60-70% are euthanized due to overcrowding, illness or behavioral issue, often the result of

neglect or abuse. Both know the pain of often being misunderstood and marginalized. We can help make it happen! The Humane Society for Hamilton County launched their Pets Healing Vets Program in May 2012 to match qualifying veterans suffering from PTSD or TBI with a shelter animal at no cost to the veteran. We're so grateful for our friends at the Indiana Recorders Association for hosting us at their meeting to help spread the word about Pets Healing Vets! Thank you to all of the attendees who listened to our story and made donations to our program.

The association's efforts raised $3,620 for HSHC's Pets Healing Vets program-- all to help veterans and shelter pets like Kyle and Clifford. A special shoutout to this dynamic duo for coming out to this event to share their story.

Happy Birthday, Chipper! 🐾💕

Macy and Chipper have been a Pets Healing Vets Pair for just over a year now, and last week the dynamic duo celebrated Chipper’s 2nd birthday! 🎉

Since coming home with Macy, Chipper has filled her life with sloppy kisses and big, goofy smiles that light up every room. You can see on his face just how much he is loved and how much love he has to give. 💕

Macy and Chipper have brought each other healing and comfort, and we're so grateful they found each other through the program. Please join us in wishing Chipper a very happy birthday!

🐾 March is Pit Bull Education Month at HSHC, and what better way to kick things off than with a new Pets Healing Vets Pair! 🐾

Pets Healing Vets alumni Kenny recently lost his beloved battle buddy, Jax, to cancer. While it has always been so hard to accept that the bonds we share with our canine companions can’t last forever, it is even harder to grieve for a best friend that was lost too soon. 💔

Kenny met with a few of our dogs with his family, but one pitty in particular stole his heart- his name was Liberty.

Now renamed Sarge, this 1-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier has gone home with an amazing new family with one lifelong mission: to live, love, and be loved by his people through all the ups and downs of life. 🐾💕

It was an honor to know that we were able to work with Kenny to give Jax the care he needed until the very end, and we could not be more proud to offer the same promise to Sarge.
