Today we observe Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865 – the day enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom.
This was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
And so with this, this day marks both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of how long justice was delayed. Juneteenth represents not just a historical milestone, but the ongoing fight for true equality and justice that continues today.
As we learn about and honor this important day, we’re reminded that understanding history – including the difficult parts – helps us learn how we can do better and helps us build a more equitable and inclusive community going forward.
But guess what? Education and action go hand in hand. So let’s take action! Today, we encourage everyone to take time to learn more about Juneteenth’s significance and to support Black-owned businesses in our community.
There is no excuse not to make your next stop intentional – choose a Black-owned business for your next meal, shopping trip, or service need-
We’ve even made it easy!
