Sometimes the biggest shift in training happens before you even begin, in the way you picture your dog.

Not the dog you’ve known on their difficult days, but the dog they’re growing into.

When you take a moment to imagine that future version, the one who moves into the session with a little more clarity and connection, something changes. You start training with a quiet sense of where things are heading, rather than replaying what went wrong last time.

It’s not about pretending everything is perfect. It’s simply choosing to hold the version of your dog who is learning, adjusting, and becoming more capable each time you work together.

That picture doesn’t magically fix behaviour…but it gives you a direction. It shapes the way you guide, the way you pause, the way you recognise progress when it appears.

Almost every meaningful change I see in dogs begins with this shift, imagining the behaviour as it’s forming, instead of getting stuck in what used to be.

The future version of your dog isn’t far away. Sometimes you just need to look at them first.
