We took our field trip dogs to Magoos Pet Outlet today!

Hunter, Mya and Cassian all did very well in the store, working around new distractions and ignoring all the fantastic smells.

Check out Maverick’s glow up! This happened FAST!! He was only graduated from puppy class for 1 month and he came back a whole adult 🥹

Mav is a real good boy, but he’s a real BIG boy, and he’s strong. He needs some help with his overgrown puppy behaviors, leash pulling, and overall control around distractions.

Our refresh dogs all worked together today — 2 puppies and 2 adult dogs!

Peanut and Bleu are the adult dogs, they’re both working on control around distractions and ignoring the social puppies.

Bailee and Moose are the puppies, both working in this high distraction setting with other dogs was very difficult. Bailee started off extremely scared of other dogs, she’s come SO FAR with her confidence!

We had lots of Field Trip dogs today!

Our first set of dogs went to Magoos Pet Outlet, and mobbed in the store like a little gang.

Alvin and Bailey are housemates, so they walked together. Molly worked for our youngest junior handler, and Dash took his very first field trip. They all did so well in this new environment with lots of new distractions.

Ruby and Mazie went to the farm store! They did a great job working in this environment, but for different reasons. For Ruby, every day is the best day of her life, and every person she meets is her new best friend. But Mazie is very low confidence and fearful of new people and situations. So this was a big deal for both of these red ladies.

Today’s Training & Exploration dogs had a great time, another amazing day for hiking!

This was our last training and exploration day of the season! After our World Championship in a couple week, if there’s more nice days late November we might add more. The dogs love it! Video to come soon!

Otis working on some of his obedience outdoors off leash. He’s working on a bit of everything here — off leash walking, off leash recalls, holding sit and down position, front and heel, and overall just engagement with the trainer around outdoor distractions.

We put this together for a client looking for a puppy recently, and thought I would share.

When looking for a breeder, they’ll almost all tell you they’re “ethical breeders”… but how do you really know? What questions should you be asking, and how do you know what red flags are?

Here’s some questions to ask:

Health
**look up the parent club for your breed and see what tests are recommended**
-what OFA health testing have you done, where can I see results (OFA tests are public record)
-have you done genetic testing
-what health conditions run in your lines/breed
-what do you do if my puppy/dog develops health problems

Temperament
-have parents demonstrated traits they were bred for, through work, sport, performance, or other relevant evaluation/how have the proven themselves worthy for breeding
-has there ever been any dog aggression/human aggression/resource guarding in the lines
-what type of temperament testing is done on puppies
-are puppies raised with puppy culture or similar
-how do you evaluate puppies and decide how to match them with appropriate homes
-what do you do if my puppy/dog develops behavior problems

Breeding goals and ethics:
-what was the goal of this pairing
-what specific traits are you looking to improve or preserve in your program
-parents’ strengths and weaknesses
-how often do you breed females in their lives
-at what age do you begin breeding males and females
-why would you choose not to breed a dog, cull it from your program

Whelping
-what is your set up like, where/how are they kept
-what do you do for health of puppies, diet, vet care
-how do you decide when puppies are ready to leave
-what handling, environmental exposure, socialization, etc. do puppies receive while being raised
-how do you evaluate their individual personalities, confidence, structure, and development

After purchase
-will I receive a written contract, health records, pedigree, etc.
-what health guarantee do you provide, and what exactly does it cover
-if I can no longer keep the animal, are you willing to take it back or help find a suitable home
-do you require the animal to be returned to you rather than surrendered or resold
-do I have breeding rights, or is spay/neuter required, and at what age
-if a serious inherited condition appears, behavioral or physical, will you share that information with affected owners and reconsider future breeding decisions
-can you connect me with other puppy owners from previous litters so I can connect and learn about their experience with relatives
