🐾 Coach Jen —
I have been practicing as a Licensed Veterinary Technician for almost 30 years 🩺🐶. I love being able to blend my veterinary background with my training experience to help dogs feel more comfortable with vet visits, procedures, and grooming. Teaching owners how to support their dogs through these moments is one of my favorite parts of the job. 💙

At Down Dog Studio, I am the class coach for our Puppy Classes 🐾 as well as several advanced courses, including Canine Good Citizen, Intermediate Skills, Tricks, and Rally 🎓✨. I also offer private lessons for puppies, basic manners, separation anxiety, and cooperative care.

I share my life with three Yorkie/Maltese crosses — Syrie, Lita, and Truly 🐕💖. We love competing in AKC agility, rally, obedience, and tricks. They are my best teachers and help me grow as a trainer every single day. 🌟

🌟 Predict & Prevent: Turning “Oops” Moments Into Progress 🌟

We’ve all had those moments where our dog reacts in a way that surprises or embarrasses us. Instead of seeing it as a failure, try viewing it as information. When we understand why something happened, we can predict it next time — and that means we can prevent it, too.

If your dog has reacted a certain way before, chances are they’ll react similarly again. That’s not bad — it’s predictable. And predictable means you can plan ahead.

Example:
If guests coming over sends your dog into chaos (barking, jumping, pacing, or hiding), assume this will happen again.
Then plan before the door opens:
✨ Let your guests know it may take you a minute to answer.
✨ Have treats ready to help your dog feel safer and more focused.
✨ Place your dog in a calm, secure spot — a side room, behind a baby gate, or on a leash with an adult giving treats.
✨ If you see guests approaching, call your dog to their safe spot before the excitement hits.
These small adjustments turn stressful moments into smoother, more successful ones. Every reaction is a chance to learn, adapt, and support your dog better next time. 💛🐾

🌟 Today’s Training Thought: Celebrate the Wins — Especially the Tiny Ones! 🌟
In dog training (and honestly… in life), it’s easy to look for the big breakthroughs — the long Down-Stays, the perfect loose-leash walk, the “wow, who is this well-behaved dog?” moments.

But the truth is: big wins are made up of dozens of tiny, almost invisible ones.
I was reminded of this working with my Frenchie, Nugai.
Holding a “stay” is hard for him. Like… really hard.

So instead of pushing for perfection, we work in little pockets of time throughout the week. I’ll ask him to sit, stay, and silently count in my head.
If he breaks? No big deal — we try again.
If he breaks twice? That’s my cue to lower the expectation so he can get a sure win on the next rep.

That simple shift has changed everything for us. ❤️
Today, Nugai can hold a stay long enough for me to turn my back, open the dishwasher, and even start unloading it.
We would never be here if I hadn’t celebrated those tiny 1–2 second stays when we first started.

👉 Remember: The big wins only happen because of the small ones that come first.
Celebrate them. Notice them. Build on them. Your dog (and you!) deserve that encouragement. 💛🐾

Meal Routine = Calm Dogs
I’ve had two dogs for years, and one routine I never skip is separate eating spaces.
Why?
• Lowers stress between dogs
• Prevents or eliminates resource guarding
• Keeps mealtimes peaceful
• Works even when traveling
• Helps avoid tension with special treats or bones
My dogs eat twice a day, always separately — no exceptions.

🐾 POTTY TRAINING QUICK TIP

Potty training success = structure + supervision + reward timing.
If your puppy is struggling, it’s not stubbornness — it’s developmentally normal. They’re learning how the human world works!

💡 Try this routine:
🕗 Out first thing in the morning
🍽 After meals & naps
🎾 After play
🌙 Before bed
⏰ + Every 1–2 hours for young pups
🎉 Reward immediately after they finish outside — 1–2 seconds matters!
With practice + patience, they will get it. You’re raising a baby brain in a big world — and you’re doing great. 🫶
