On Our Cover: This issue’s theme is proclaimed by our cover image: a brace of burly Gordon Setters built for a hard day’s work on rugged terrain.
About the Charles Olivier de Penne’s watercolor, from AKC Museum of the Dog curator Alan Fausel: “Now, regularly referred to as Gordon Setters, in the 19th century, especially in France, they would be Black and Tans. “Although de Penne is primarily remembered for his hounds, there are the occasional pointers or setters that inhabit his works. A similar brace of Black and Tan setters appears in paintings among his works, making one believe they are the same pair.”

It doesn’t matter HOW good the board and train was. Or how skilled the trainer.

Dogs will only be as trained as their owners allow them to be.

Let it all slide— and your dog will pretend they know nothing. Hold the standard, and you’ll continue having a trained dog for a lifetime.

The cool part is, YOU get to choose which dog you have.

We have another hot day in store! In the graphic, we're sharing dog safety tips (and many apply to cats.) Comment with a pic of how you and your pets are keeping cool today!

As this heat wave continues, we're reminding you today that there are some types of dogs who are at an increased risk of heat stroke. Smushed-face dogs, huskies and malamutes, puppies and elderly dogs, black dogs and dogs carrying extra weight, to name a few. Keep your dogs safe and out of the heat - exercise them early in the day or after the sun goes down!

This Is What a Breed Legend Looks Like
Making its Facebook debut, here’s a classic photo of Chow Chow Ch. Eastward Liontamer of Elster, ROM, affectionately known as Louie. He was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hetherington and Dr. Samuel Draper, and bred by William and Florence Elster. Black-and-white doesn’t do justice to Louie’s brilliant red coat, groomed to perfection by handler Ted Young Jr.

Between 1968 and 1973, this magnificent specimen won the Chow Chow Club’s national specialty five times. The group-winning Ch. Scotchow Liontamer Louise was among this prodigious sire’s 28 champion offspring. (Photo: AKC Gazette collection)

With this oppressive weather, it's time to talk heat + humidity. If the percent humidity plus the temp in degrees F is greater than 150, it's too hot to heavily exercise your pets. This morning, for example, the temp was 81 and humidity was also 81, which equals 162 - too hot to take your dog for a run. Remember! Dogs cool by panting, and when the air is loaded with moisture, panting isn't very effective. The weather forecast calls for high heat and humidity through Friday, so take care - with yourselves and your pets! And if your dog shows any signs of heat stress, we're open 24/7/365.
