“From Leash to Lens”
South County [Rhode Island] KC, 1977: Jane Forsyth handled Mrs. Cheever Porter’s Irish Setter Ch. McKendree’s Bold Venture to Best in Show under Peter Knoop. The photo was taken by William P. Gilbert, of Somerville, New Jersey.

Gilbert gave up his professional handler’s license in 1964 to become a dog show photographer. His father, William J., was a Great Dane exhibitor who taught his son the handler’s trade. At 12 years old, in his Boy Scout uniform, Gilbert the younger handled his first dog at Westminster. He served four years as a Navy photographer and later attended the School of Modern Photography in New York.

In late 1964, William Brown eased into semiretirement after years as one of the busiest official photographers in the dog game. Gilbert was his successor, mentored by Evelyn Shafer. A handling client said that Gilbert was going “from leash to lens,” a phrase the young photographer adopted as his motto.

Gilbert’s territory encompassed shows in the Northeast and down the coast as far south as Virginia, shooting such high-profile assignments as Westminster and Montgomery County. Just as Shafer mentored him, Gilbert mentored young John Ashbey, himself a former Navy photographer.

Gilbert often credited his handling experience with helping him obtain the most flattering shots of dogs. “One of the things that makes a picture interesting is the dog’s expression,” he said. “To get it, I’m following Bill Brown’s technique in barking at the dog, throwing film packs, or doing just about anything to catch the dog’s attention. Without expression, a picture usually is no good.”
Gilbert died in 2020, at age 89, and was survived by his wife of 65 years, Ginny, and their children and grandchildren.

A city sidewalk, a backyard, a puddle on the daily walk. Dogs can encounter the bacteria that cause leptospirosis in places that are part of ordinary life.

Research by Dr. Jane Sykes of the University of California, Davis, and colleagues expanded understanding of this serious disease and the dogs at risk.

Their work documented infections in dogs not traditionally considered at risk, including small dogs and those living in cities.

That research contributed to the evidence behind broader vaccination guidance. In 2024, the American Animal Hospital Association updated its guidelines to recommend leptospirosis vaccination as a core vaccine for all dogs.

Preventing this infection protects dogs and can reduce risk for people, who can also become infected.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Sykes and her colleagues, recognized by the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) among the 2026 Canine Health Discovery of the Year Award semifinalists.

In November—“Living Large in the ’80s”
