Off leash freedom is more than “can your dog recall.” It’s can your dog keep an ear and eye on you at all times despite distractions and distance? Are you MOTIVATING enough and VALUABLE enough to your dog?
So how do you build that kind of relationship?
CLEAR MARKERS (being able to tell your dog you did that right! A reward is coming). Whether that’s food, toys, praise, or pets depends entirely on your dog! We need to MOTIVATE them to make the right choice
Consistent and reinforced expectations. Choose 1 word (here, come, dogs name, etc) and ONLY use that word! Dogs don’t speak English. Having 1 word that always means comes back adds a lot of clarity! Introducing tools like prongs and ecollars can also help reinforce your recall. But they CANT teach it and should not be a replacement for a solid recall command. That being said…
KEEP THE LEASH ON. It’s so tempting when first starting out to throw the leash away and trust your dog will come back. But they probably won’t and every time they ignore you they learn “wowww it’s way more fun to run away” or “I’ll come back on my own time.” The leash is your friend! It allows your dog to make mistakes and gives you a safety net while you both learn!
Practice makes perfect! Work your recall in new environments (fields, beaches, trails, anywhere you can think of). Don’t forget to practice around dogs and people before the leash comes off!
Take it SLOW. Recall is one of the hardest behaviors to teach a dog. Not only do they have to MOVE AWAY from whatever they’re interested in but they have to come ALL the way back to you. That’s a big ask for a lot of dogs! Start in low distraction environments like your neighborhood or backyard. And REMEMBER YOUR COOKIES! 🍪 🐶
