Shel Graves Animal Consulting

Shel Graves Animal Consulting Dog training, dog and cat behavior consulting, and pet loss support. We have a heart for shelter and rescue animals as well as senior dogs and cats.

Shel Graves Animal Consulting uses positive reinforcement training to help animals (dogs, cat, humans, and all) be relaxed, confident, playful, and safe together. We provide day training and coaching services to help families resolve troublesome behaviors. When animals have experienced the worst humans can be, we show them the best -- and watch them blossom! We are there for difficult transitions

and conversations including end-of-life and grief counseling.

In need of a new home: Maddie, F, is an about 7-year-old about, 14-pound, super cute and affectionate terrier mix. Maddie is a sweet, generally confident dog who will need to adjust to rehoming. Location: Everett, Wash.

I can offer a free training consult to her adopter to help her settle in and avoid known issues.

Maddie was previously a fearful rescue. She bonded well and gained confidence living years in her home as the sole dog with a senior couple. She is beloved, but the couple have had medical issues, are struggling to meet her needs for exercise and potty breaks, and with great sadness have decided to rehome her.

Maddie has bitten (with punctures) the male in the home when he was trying to move her from the bed or couch or passing by these locations carrying objects. She does give warning signals and growls.

Maddie is very bonded to her person (the female in the home) and prefers to be by her side. At the retirement community where she now lives, she is well-known, relaxed when out and about and approaches and accepts pets from everyone she meets.

In Maddie’s ideal home, she would continue to be doted upon by a gentle person. She likes affection, walking around with a cute prance in her step, snuggles, and the occasional zoomie. She walks well on lead. No pulling. She does well with baths and grooming.

She could do OK with another small dog (she usually approaches, sniffs, and shows mild interest), however her preference would likely be to be the only dog. She has not lived with cats before, but might do OK with a confident dog-savvy cat. No large dogs or children in the home.

Maddie currently lives in an apartment and this works for her. While she would certainly love a yard, it would need to be well-secured (she has found holes in fences and escaped through them in the past).

No medical or health issues. She’s not on any medications. She’s active with good mobility (can walk to the park, runs up flights of stairs, can jump up on furniture).

Happy one-year anniversary to Everett Animal Shelter's Wandering Rover program. 293 dogs have participated in 1,136 outings.

🐾💙🥳 One year ago we launched our Wandering Rover program! 🐾💙🥳

It's hard to believe it's been a whole year, here are some highlights:
• 🐾 293 dogs have participated
• 🏡 233 dogs have been adopted
• 🐶 5 participating dogs are currently in foster-to-adopt
• 🔁 12 dogs were transferred to trusted animal welfare partners for placement
• 🔎 7 available dogs recently participated and are gaining exposure
• 🚶‍♂️ 1,136 total outings have taken place
• 📆 142 active program days since launch

A huge thanks to our staff who prep dogs and supplies each week, who sift through photos and add Rover feedback to adoptions bios.

And of course we can't thank the community enough for embracing this program! Each week you show up, rain or shine, to help a shelter dog explore the world outside the shelter. This program goes far beyond simply walking dogs. It gives our homeless dogs a break from the kennel environment, provides mental and physical stimulation, and helps them shine in a real-world setting. For the public, it’s an opportunity to meet adoptable pets in a low-pressure, engaging way.

Have you participated? Drop your Wandering Rover photos in the comments!

I've been appointed to the Everett Animal Shelter Advisory Board. First meeting tonight. Looking forward to hearing more about the shelter's behavior program pilot. Addressing behavioral needs of shelter animals is so important for the animals and for their future families!
Mission: Everett Animal Services provides for the well-being of animals and the community through progressive animal sheltering, education, and municipal code enforcement.

Dog Trainer Reviews Superman: Why I Loved Krypto's "Behavioral Issues"

Although I was drawn in from the beginning by the appearance of Krypto, it was the very end of the Superman movie that made me love it. Krypto's last scene and Superman's comment explaining the root of Krypto's "behavioral issues" was spot on.We get more of the behaviors we reinforce -- and behavior...

Nice feature on station training for cats with trainer Erin Britton and Karen Pryor Academy. Can you train your cat? Yes! And teaching your cat where it pays to hang out is a great skill for cats!
