Grateful for the simple things.

Farmers market season is back in Southwest Florida, and that is one of my favorite things about this time of year. Sunny mornings, fresh oranges, a little breeze, and a dog happily trotting along beside you. Hard to beat.

I spend my days with dogs, and they remind me all the time how little it takes to be happy. A slow walk. A sunny spot on the floor. Their person coming home. They do not wait for a big moment to be grateful. They just are.

So this week, I am thankful for every family who has let me into their home and trusted me with their dogs, for this community, and for every wagging tail along the way.

A little spooky, a lot of snuggles. That is the goal for your dog this Halloween.

Between costumes, candy, and a doorbell that rings all night, Halloween can be a lot for a pup. Three easy ways to keep it spookless:

Keep costumes comfy. If your dog freezes or keeps trying to wiggle out of it, a festive bandana counts too.

Candy up, paws off. Chocolate and sugar-free treats with xylitol can make dogs very sick, and wrappers and sticks are a hazard of their own.

Give your dog a cozy retreat away from the door before the trick-or-treaters arrive, and make sure they are wearing ID in case they try to make a run for it.

Most owners know how to tell their dog no. Far fewer know what to do the second their dog listens.

Marker words mark a behavior at the exact moment it happens. When your dog does something you don't want, use a no reward marker like off, quiet, leave it, drop it or eh, eh, and let your face, voice and body show you mean business. As soon as your dog stops, give a reward marker in a high, happy voice and follow it with something your dog loves.

Stay consistent and your dog starts choosing the behavior you want, because good things happen when he does. The unwanted behavior fades on its own because it never pays off. And never yell or get physical. Good pack leaders keep their cool.

I had the pleasure of presenting to the Grow Business Network Estero chapter, and what a great group.

I shared how Canine Command brings training right to your home, on your schedule, at a fraction of the usual cost. The conversation also got into the real-life stuff owners deal with every day: pulling on the leash, jumping on guests, and the dog who only listens when there is a treat in sight. Biting, jumping, growling, leash reactivity. Every one of these can be fixed without yelling and without getting physical.

Your dog does need to know when something isn't okay. But raising your voice or putting hands on your dog breaks the bond between you, and it breaks your leadership too.

What works is marking the behavior with clear cues like off, quiet, leave it, drop it, and a simple uh-uh. The real secret is timing and technique, and that's the part I can show you quickly.
