Is it even possibly to not love a golden puppy?!? You may ask yourself, why might a puppy need to see the dentist already? Most of the puppies we see are due to a malocclusion, and in a lot of cases this is caused by persistent deciduous teeth (baby teeth that are not falling out on schedule). Not monitoring or treating these teeth can lead to many problems!

In this case, the deciduous teeth had fallen out, but not soon enough which caused the adult canine (404) to erupt in the incorrect position. 404 is severely linguoversed and under erupted creating traumatic contact palatal to 103-104 (ouch!).

Treatment options for this tooth include orthodontics, shortening of the crown+vital pulp therapy, or extraction.

Has your pet ever had a fractured tooth? Did you know there can be multiple treatment options? Extractions aren’t always your only choice! Have a look at this K-9 officer, notice the exposed pulp on the fractured canine tooth? This tooth was restored with root canal therapy allowing this pet to get back out in the field and fighting crime. The incisor next to it was radiographically stable and we were able to place a sealant. This treatment will hopefully provide comfort and prolong the life of that tooth.

Follow up from yesterday’s post! Take away: As healthcare providers, we shouldn’t assume something that looks very aggressive can’t be treated.

This came back as Osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma is generally a very invasive and highly metastatic tumor in dogs but in some cases like this, it can arise more from the surface of bone (periosteum) and be less invasive. At first glance, the tumor appears very large and aggressive, but after it was removed from the oral tissue a narrow stalk of attachment was revealed and tumor-free surgical margins were easily achieved!A healthcare provider could have looked in this dog’s mouth and given him a grave prognosis, but after further investigation and then surgery, he was given a new lease on life and has experienced a very good outcome! 🤗
