My Aunt, Karalee Longtoe
(--7/2/1976 ~ 6/6/2017),
is the inspiration for Me & My Shadow
Wellness Center. She loved animals, nature, photography, and most of all her son, Jace.
Her favorite color was purple and butterflies held a significant meaning for her.
My Aunt Kara battled with addiction throughout most of her life. She managed
to eventually turn her life around and became
a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor in order to try to help adolescents who found themselves trapped in similar circumstances. Unfortunately, addiction pulled her back into its ugly grasp and she started huffing. Signs of her relapse were noticed
and reported, but the 'system' failed her...
Her 5 year old son found her
on her bedroom floor one morning, succumbed to her addiction.
According to Substance Abuse And
Mental Health Services Administration,
"Mental health problems can sometimes lead to alcohol or drug use, as some people with
a mental health problem may misuse these substances as a form of self-medication."
No child should ever have to experience finding their parent like Jace did!
