Happy Memorial Day weekend!
We hope everyone has some fun and stays safe!
Also, it’s the time of year we want to remind everyone of the very deadly and preventable dangers of animals in hot cars. Tragically, we were reminded of this reality on Friday afternoon. Please keep your pets safe, and call 911 if you come across an unsafe pet.

Happy Friday Everyone!
I’m sure we all can tell that Summer is here and the heat is rising, so we wanted to remind everyone about pet safety during these hot days!
🐶First of all, the golden rule - NEVER leave a pet unattended in a car, in hot or cold weather. Not even for a “quick minute”, it is extremely dangerous and can cause severe organ damage or death.
🐱It is important to limit exercise on hot days and always provide access to shade and water. Do not rely on a fan, animals respond differently than humans to heat, and fans do not cool off pets as effectively as they do people.
🌞 Cool your pet inside and out! You can offer ice cubes as a treat, a cool (not too cold) bath if they enjoy it, or lay out a cooling mat which can be found online or at some pet stores! Dogs in particular would enjoy these similar to laying out on the kitchen floor!
🔥WATCH FOR SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE - Some signs include very heavy panting in dogs or open mouth breathing in cats, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, excessive thirst, lethargy, dizziness, lack or coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting and deep red or purple colored tongue.
- - > If you see these signs contact a veterinarIan immediately! Move your pet into shade or an air conditioned area, apply ice packs or cold wet towels to their head, neck and chest or run cool (not cold) water over them, let them drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.

Everyone be safe out there and enjoy the weather! Humans, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!

Edit: Good News! This kitty was found by his family late last night! We are so happy that he is now safe at home 😻

Good evening everyone,
We are asking for help in locating a missing cat, he is a short haired, grey colored kitty. He’s very skittish and went missing near 5 corners Wednesday afternoon. He is not very familiar with being outside, he was wearing a collar. If anyone sees him or finds him please let us know. Our number again is 425-775-3449. We are guessing he is very scared and hoping he is tuckered down safely in someone’s yard. Please just keep an eye out and let us know if you see him so we can help him get back to his family. Thank you everyone, have a good night!

If you haven't been to EVH in a while you might not have noticed that we have a new feature in our Lobby. Long time client Cheryl Hufnagel has been curating shows by local Artists who specialize in Animal Art. Every two months or so she invites between one and three artists to exhibit their work in our "Gallery". Occasionally she exhibits some pieces as well. Our current show includes works by Colleen Kearns Eyeman whose Bernese Mountain Dog portrait "Molly" is included here. We are also proud to exhibit works by Virginia "Lynn" Kerr whose watercolor of two Corgis "Waiting for the Masters' Voice" is pictured here. Cheryl Hufnagel has included some of her pieces in our current show - including "Warm Fuzzy." Next time you're in the neighborhood stop by and enjoy these works by fellow animal lovers. We have the Artists complete bios posted and many of them would be glad to do a commissioned work of the best pet in Edmonds, who might wish to accompany you on your visit!

Unusual pet diets may be linked to heart disease

There has been a lot in the news lately about the connection between "Grain -Free" and or high legume (lentils, chick peas and peas) diets and atypical DCM especially in dogs. Here is a link to the American Veterinary Medical Association's statement on the issue. Please read it and feel free to call us for suggestions on an appropriate diet for your pet. https://www.avma.org/News/JAVMANews/Pages/180801e.aspx

Some specialty diets may be causing heart disease in dogs, and researchers are trying to identify the connection.

Missing Dog! Please look closely at these pictures and keep an eye out!
TEDDY - Pit/Basset mix, tan and white, 50 lbs, skin allergies. We had a possible sighting Friday 4/27 11:45pm near Maplewood Park & 196th St in Edmonds but we aren’t sure that this was him. He was also seen Thursday 4/26 at 228th St SW and 48th Ave W Terrace Creek Park/Candy Cane in Mountlake Terrace. Please immediately call if you see him 910–988–5281 or 425–686–0565.

Teddy is likely very scared so do not chase! Our best guess is that he’s hanging out near parks, golf courses, cemeteries given where the sightings have been. He was also seen 4/21 at Holyrood Cemetery on 205th St and 4/19 at 99 Ranch Market near Ballinger Lake Park.

He went missing from Shoreview Park parking lot on 4/13.

Hey Everyone!
This week is National Pet ID Week! This is about the importance of having our pets microchipped and/or tagged and making sure the information provided is always up to date. I know this is easy to forget about, so let's all take a moment this week and make sure our pets have their tags or chips, and that the contact info listed is accurate. Studies show that 1 in 3 pets get lost, and without proper ID 90% of them won't return home! How scary! Let's do everything we can to keep this from happening to our pets!

Last night a good Samaritan brought a dog in right before closing who had been hit by a car. He had no microchip or identifying tags to help us find the owner. He was soaking wet and in shock, as well as having multiple abrasions. We started him on oxygen therapy during his initial physical exam and placed an IV catheter so we could start him on fluids and administer pain medication. We stayed after hours to stabilize him and attempt to find the owners. When no owners were found, our staff drove him to Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle where they could offer him 24 hour care.

Thanks to all the efforts of those on social media and our staff, "Doodle Bop" was happily reunited with his owner and is now back at home and safe with very minimal injuries. We encourage everyone to get their pets microchipped and properly licensed with their county, as well as a rabies vaccine that is accompanied by a small tag with a number that can also help to identify owners and reunite lost pets! Thanks again to the good Samaritan, VSC, and everyone else who helped in treating him and locating his owners!!

Rabies :: Washington State Department of Health

Did you know?

In 2016, twenty rabid bats were identified in Washington State including three each in King, Spokane, and Chelan counties, two each in Lewis and Whatcom counties, and one each in Clark, Ferry, Grant, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, and Thurston counties.
As of September, there have been 21 rabid bats found in Washington State this year, with some discovered in homes and along city sidewalks, two found in Snohomish County alone. According to the Washington State Department of Health website, you may never know there has been a bat in your home until a family member (human or furry) has been bitten. Rabies is fatal – the best way to protect you and your family is to keep your pets vaccinated! Washington State now requires pets to be vaccinated against Rabies because of the danger it poses.
Call us anytime and we can check if your pets are up to date!
For more information, I have provided this link to the Washington State Department of Health website that addresses Rabies.

Thank you for saving kitty paws 🐾
These are my dogs, Toohey (black dog) and Duke (white dog). Toohey is 14 years old. He woke up last week and was dizzy, eyes darting around indicating vertigo, stumbling. I got him settled on a dog bed in a secure area, called Edmond's Vet Hospital. They were wonderful!! They took him in right away, assessed him, did blood work, etc. They kept him for the day for observation. Sent him home with antibiotics, motion sickness meds and sedatives. The doctor and vet assistant were so caring and also honest with me that he may not make it through this: could be severe inner ear infection or could be a brain tumor. Two days later, he declined to this picture. He could not walk on his own, eyes continually darting, not eating or drinking, my heart was breaking. Day 4 he woke up, stumbled, but walked on his own for a bit. Blood work came back with everything within normal limits but very high white blood cell count, indicating an infection. Back to the vet for another check. Doctor added another antibiotic with the hopes this will help. Day 5 tail wagging, eating, drinking and walking on his own. Today, he's almost 100% back to himself. I am so grateful for the care he's received. The staff have taken such loving care of him. I had to board him one day during this in order to attend a family memorial. They took excellent care of him. I have taken my pets to this clinic for the past 2 years and will continue to trust them with my pets. Toohey is on his way back to health. We are leaving for a week at the ocean on Saturday and so happy Toohey will be able to join us. ,
Somebody has made herself at home ❤️ With patience and a calm environment, Margaret is beginning to flourish. Thanks to all at Edmonds Vet for introducing us and letting us be her forever home 😊
