is happening now through May 31! This year’s theme is “Grounded in Community” with a focus on the sparrow family, an often-overlooked bird that represents resilience, connection, and the power of belonging. Like sparrows, Black communities deserve to be seen, heard, and honored—not just in birding spaces, but in every space. Together, we can build a future grounded in community, where everyone feels welcome. 🖤🐦

Whether it’s the whirlwind of energy from a hummingbird or the vibrant beauty of orioles, your outdoor space can become a haven for some of North America’s most fascinating bird species. Both will eat a nectar solution (four parts water, one part sugar), though orioles are partial to orange slices, grape jelly and mealworms. We can help you turn your backyard into a bird paradise, buzzing with life!

Many birds enjoy eating jelly like orioles, grosbeaks, House Finches, mockingbirds, catbirds and some warblers. It mimics some of the fruits they eat in nature. Jelly, like any other bird food, should be offered responsibly.

Jelly should be as natural as possible. Bird-friendly jelly is best with its fruit and sugar. Avoid preservatives and other additives, especially sugar alternatives.

Too often, jelly is offered in wide bowls or the whole jelly jar is hung to allow birds to reach in to feed. These can create dangerous situations for birds, especially inquisitive hummingbirds.

We recommend small-cup jelly feeders to prevent bird’s bodies from contacting the jelly. Only provide a small amount of jelly each day so that the birds will consume it while it’s still fresh.

There are several ways to make windows safer for birds, and one of our favorite solutions is hanging a window feeder. It’s a win-win! Not only does it help prevent collisions, but it also gives you an up-close view of your feathered friends. 🐦 Check out some of our window feeders here: https://order.wbu.com/order/search/?searchTerm=window

Horned larks are one of the first migrating birds to show up in Minnesota. They arrive in late Feb or early March and can be found in bare fields or areas with short grass, like athletic fields. They are ground scavengers and feed on seeds, so you won't see them at your feeders. A customer shared her recent sighting of them near the Flying Cloud airport (Eden Prairie) at the soccer fields. They are difficult to find by sight as they blend in with the brown grass, but they are currently singing and that's the key to locating them. This is a male I found there this weekend. The males have "horns" which are tufts of feathers and a black mask (this particular one didn't have the full mask) with a yellow throat while the females lack the tufts, yellow coloring and have a much lighter black mask. Signs of spring!

🔥 At Wild Birds Unlimited, we offer the widest selection of hot pepper bird foods on the market. Why does that matter? It means that no matter what type of bird feeder you have, we offer a hot pepper food to help deter critters like squirrels, rodents and raccoons. Hot pepper foods are readily enjoyed by birds, but send critters on their way. 🚫🐿️
