Trees absorb harmful air particulate matter. Exposure to fine particle pollution can cause serious health risks. Your support of Wild Birds Unlimited has enabled us to plant more than 113,000 trees through our partnership with Arbor Day Foundation. These trees are hard at work. Over the next 40 years they will remove 188.97 tons of air pollutants, which equates to enough oxygen for 453,912 people for one day.

Most adult songbirds molt (change feathers) once a year, usually after nesting season. During this process, worn feathers drop away and fresh ones emerge. Growing feathers demands a lot of protein (feathers are more than 90% protein) and fats.

You can make a difference by keeping your feeders full of high-fat, high-protein foods, such as our Finch Blend, No-Mess Blends, Bluebird Bugberry Blend®, peanuts, sunflower chips, mealworms and no-melt suets. We were excited to help the Eden Prairie Police Department get this racing pigeon back to its owner 😀 The pigeon was released in Oklahoma and made it just a few miles short of home in Chaska before becoming injured, all in just 15 hours!

Helping a Homing Pigeon Come Home

Last Thursday the EPPD received a call from a resident who saw an injured pigeon in her/his yard that had a band on it. An officer picked up the pigeon and brought it back to the police department where it was given water and shelter for the night.

The following morning, Community Service Officer Dmitry Ivanov checked on the pigeon and determined that its injured wing had not healed. CSO Ivanov wanted to return the pigeon to its owner but was not familiar with the band on the pigeon’s leg and how to retrieve information from it. He decided to visit Wild Birds Unlimited in Eden Prairie to see if they had any ideas. Employees there looked up the band on a website and located an associated pigeon racing organization. That organization was able to trace the pigeon to a man living in Chaska.

CSO Ivanov contacted the man and learned that he and the pigeon had been participating in a pigeon race in Oklahoma days earlier and that the pigeon had not returned. In the race, pigeons are released far from their homes and the first to successfully return to their home is the winner. In this case the pigeon flew almost 600 miles in the direction of home but was apparently injured just miles short of its goal. The pigeon and its owner were happily reunited at the police department.
