Regarding Outside Pets

With cold temperatures now in the area for the long term, pet owners are being reminded of the laws concerning pets and the outdoors.

When temperatures fall below 32 degrees, dogs that are tethered and left unattended outside without shelter can only stay outside for 30 minutes. Pet shelters must be kept clean and the owners are reminded that along with proper food, access to clean water is just as important. Shelters must be able to help the animal retain body heat.

Officials with the State Police and the Animal Cruelty Unit of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation ask that outdoor pets be monitored during extreme cold conditions and consult a vet if you suspect your pet has suffered from cold-related injuries or illnesses. If you have any questions or concerns about the care of an animal, contact your police department or a Humane Society Police Officer.
