How to Teach Your Dog “Give”

⚠️ Do not attempt this with dogs who already show signs of resource guarding

1. Take control of your dogs head with a leash or collar
2. Grab the ball
3. With your middle finger, press down on their tongue until they spit the ball out. Then give the toy back!

One of the biggest mistakes people make is teaching their dog that releasing a toy means the fun is over. If every “give” results in the toy disappearing, your dog may become more reluctant to let go next time.

Practice trading and giving the toy back so your dog learns that releasing something doesn’t always mean losing it. The goal is to build a dog who willingly lets go because they trust the process!

Is your dog showing signs of resource guarding? We can help you build the skills and confidence needed to enjoy playtime safely!

For young, excitable dogs like Brody, watching the world go by is HARD! He loves saying hello to people, chasing leaves, marking anything that smells good, and most importantly, never sitting still.

So for Brody, practicing how to simply exist in public without interacting with everything is tough, but SO important.

Think about that kid in a store who just can’t stop grabbing everything they see. Exhausting, right? And eventually, you might not even want to take them out in public! Dogs can be the same way.

Walking calmly on leash is one piece of the puzzle, but learning to see exciting things without feeling the need to chase, greet, or investigate them is just as important.

Whether it’s picnics, ball games, coffee shops, or busy parks, learning to do nothing is an incredibly valuable skill.

Tug isn’t simply about fighting for the toy, but a way to build engagement, confidence, and boundaries all while having fun with your dog.

When your dog has a weak grip, grabs the wrong part of the toy, or accidentally goes for your hand, pause the game.

Stop actively tugging so your dog notices the change and has a chance to adjust their grip.

The moment they successfully re-grip the toy, play resumes!

Clear communication teaches your dog that the way to keep the fun going is to engage with the toy appropriately, not to fight harder for it.

For driven dogs, tug may not be safe until boundaries have been established. For help teaching your dog, reach us at (425) 419-8967

When your dog knows their place, it doesn’t matter if it’s hiding under a rug!

Teaching your dog a clear place command means they understand exactly where to go, even when things look a little different.

……..

Does your dog know where to go when told “go lay down”? If not, we can help! Message us at (425) 419-8967 to get started.

Some dogs naturally learn to untangle themselves from leashes, poles, and trees, while others need a little guidance!

Here’s how to teach them:

1. Encourage them to problem-solve. Some dogs will just stand there waiting for help!

2. Help them succeed. Move around to make the solution easier, and untangle them most of the way if needed.

3. Praise, praise, and praise! Dogs love getting recognition for a job well done so… tell them!

It’s a simple skill that builds independence and problem-solving. Don’t be intimidated. With a little guidance and practice, your dog can learn it too!

Are all items on the ground safe for dog consumption?

For impulsive, food driven dogs, an automatic leave is especially important and more than just good manners.

This habit helps keep them safe around dropped food, medications, and other potentially dangerous items.

To change this habit, teach your dog to be respectful of dropped items by stopping them from sn**ching up food. Instead, pick them up yourself and offer them from your hand when appropriate.

The floor isn’t an open buffet! This habit helps keep kids safe and lowers the likelihood of a dog fight for those that have multiple pets. Consistency with the little things builds safer, more reliable habits.

If you have a dog that’s quick to sn**ch up dangerous items from the ground, we can help! Message us at (425) 419-8967

One of the best parts of good training is having dogs who can happily hang out while I get work done.

Clear expectations lead to dogs understanding when to play and when to be bored.

Accountability from day one teaches the dog no loop holes exist, and no mischievous habits develop.

How many dogs do you see?👀

Boarding doesn’t mean every dog needs to be in the middle of everything.

We love when boarding dogs can seamlessly integrate into our pack, but for Callie, we know that isn’t what’s best for her.

This girl is slow to warm up, can be reactive, and really values her personal space. While she’s staying with us, we’re giving her a quieter area of the house where she can decompress behind a baby gate while still being part of the household.

Our goal isn’t to overwhelm her—it’s to make her stay as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Sometimes the best care we can provide is simply giving a dog the space they need to feel safe.
