With 50 staff members and over 300 volunteers to care for up to 3,000 animals per year. La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourag

e kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center. The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility. Help Them. One Paw at a Time.

⛳️ $91,100 raised for LPCHS! 🐾💙

We are incredibly grateful to have been selected as the 2026 nonprofit beneficiary of the 31st Annual Columbine Classic Duet Golf Tournament — and even more grateful to share that this incredible event raised $91,100 for the La Plata County Humane Society!

A much-anticipated annual tradition, the Columbine Classic brings together 120 golfers from Glacier Club and Dalton Ranch Golf Club in support of the Nick Turner Women’s Golf Scholarship Endowment at Fort Lewis College and a local nonprofit selected each year by a vote of the women’s golf leagues at both clubs. In true Columbine Classic fashion, registration filled just six minutes after opening!

This extraordinary gift will help us continue providing shelter, care, protection and second chances to vulnerable animals in our community. 🐶🐱

A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Columbine Classic committee, all of the incredible volunteers, sponsors, donors, golfers and everyone who contributed their time, talent and generosity to make this event such a tremendous success.

We are honored to have been chosen and so grateful to be part of this wonderful Durango tradition. Thank you for helping make brighter tomorrows possible for animals in our community. 💙🐾

Late summer can be itchy season for pets.

Allergies, fleas, dry skin, and outdoor irritants can cause dogs and cats to scratch more than usual.

A few helpful steps:

▪️ Check for fleas and ticks
▪️ Keep bedding clean
▪️ Brush regularly
▪️ Watch for redness, licking, or hair loss

If your pet seems uncomfortable, contact your local veterinarian.

A little attention now can help your pet feel better all season long.
