With 50 staff members and over 300 volunteers to care for up to 3,000 animals per year. La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourag

e kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center. The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility. Help Them. One Paw at a Time.

It's National Animal Control Officer Week!
A huge shoutout to our incredible La Plata County Humane Societyand Animal Control Officers.

These officers are on the front lines every day—rescuing animals in need, reuniting lost pets with families, and helping us at DSNiP keep our community’s animals safe, healthy, and cared for.
The Towaoc officers go the extra mile—literally—by transporting animals for their community members and for pets at the shelter who need care or placement.

We see your hard work, your compassion, and your commitment—and we are SO grateful. 💙🐶🐱

Our Story

La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. The humane society was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, rescue animals in distress, assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, find homes for unwanted animals, and encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise money for the homeless animals. They sell gently-used goods donated by our community. We accept donations 7 days a week through our on-site drive through donation center. The Thrift Store helps to support other local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition, the Women’s Resource Center and many other non-profits. The Shelter & Thrift Store are directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, a veterinarian was added to our staff to ensure that all animals have a health and wellness check, are spayed or neutered, provided initial vaccines, implanted with an identification microchip and have the best quality care before leaving our facility. We are committed to helping animals become their best selves before they are adopted into forever homes. Help Us, Help Them, One Paw at a Time.
