fully done! It's amazing how much garbage is packed into a single mile of highway! Today almost our whole AVS tech team, plus an Animas High School student that is doing a LINK internship with us these past 3 weeks, bagged up at least 20 more bags of garbage along Hwy. 172.

From L-R, Dylan (our AHS intern), Jennifer (Office Manager), Erika (Veterinary Assistant) and Terri (Lead RVT) put in a few more hours of clean up!

Our Adopt-A-Highway signs should be up in the next few weeks and we've committed to 4 clean-ups a year for a minimum of 2 years. Our community has come through for us in a really big way to make AVS successful this past year and a half and we want to give back in any way we can! We also love Colorado and want to keep it beautiful ❤

AVS adopted a highway to help keep our corner of Colorado beautiful! We got halfway done today and will finish it next weekend. If you drive on 172 between marker 22 and 23, you'll see our trash bags along the highway! There were lots of liquor bottles- please don't drink and drive! We got our kids to volunteer as well because AVS is a family business. 😊

We're walking today in the Durango Walk to End Alzheimer's. If you can, please join us there or cheer on Team Advanced Veterinary Surgery/Team Trousdale! The Walk organizers are very close to meeting their goal and any donation is appreciated! AVS donated $1000 towards the goal of ending Alzheimer's, as it hits close to home for the Trousdale family. Our sialocele (salivary gland inflammation) patient literally rolled in today for his two week post-op recheck. He's doing great after surgery and we love to see Kash Kassonova! 😁

Did you know?

Here at AVS, we have the capabilities to perform laparoscopic procedures!

This big girl here (Irish Wolfhound) had a laparoscopic ovariectomy and prophylactic gastropexy with Dr. Trousdale!

Definitions:

1. Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical technique in which short, narrow tubes are inserted into the abdomen through small incisions. Through these trochars, long, narrow instruments are inserted. The surgeon uses these instruments to manipulate, cut, and sew tissue.

2. In dog spaying, an ovariectomy removes only the ovaries, while an ovariohysterectomy removes both the ovaries and uterus. Ovariohysterectomy is the more common procedure, and both procedures significantly reduce the risk of uterine and mammary cancer, and pyometra.

3. A gastropexy involves suturing (stitching) the stomach to the body wall, effectively "tacking" it in place to prevent it from twisting or rotating abnormally. This will hopefully help prevent G.D.V. in the future for this deep chested girl!

We had middle school visitors today for a Project Future field trip. We got to show them around the hospital, teach them some fun animal medicine science, and they got to take home some pens and make personalized bookmarks with pet meme stickers.

Their favorite things were petting our employee Terri's snake and hearing Zeppie the ball python's heartbeat on our doppler, and seeing the CT machine images. Fun facts for AVS: our five employees have a combined experience of almost 90 years in veterinary medicine. We also have the ONLY veterinary CT in the Four Corners region which makes it a lot easier for pet owners to get advanced imaging without having to travel to Colorado Springs or Albuquerque!
