Today is National Iguana Awareness Day!
While there are several species of iguanas, the most popular in the pet trade is the green iguana! Juvenile iguanas are easily found in most pet stores and reptile expos. Add in the variety of colors they come in, and we can see why they are a big hit!
🦎Why don't we carry them? 🦎
With their large size (adults can reach 5-7 feet long and live 20+ years with proper care) and their even larger enclosure size requirements, they are one of the most commonly rehomed animals in the pet trade. With their low purchase price, they are often impulsively purchased and many people are unaware of their husbandry requirements beforehand, thinking that this is an easy animal to take care of. They can potentially have a poor temperament as they are notoriously aggressive during breeding season, and although they are herbivorous, they have a nasty bite. Add in sharp claws and a tail whip that could send a ball flying, most people tend to try to get rid of them quickly.
This is not to say that they are bad pets, but they are not the right fit for most homes.
We at The Pet Works, Inc., value the quality of life not only for the pets we sell, but for the customers that take them home!
