And he couldn’t be more right.
One of the things I love about liberty with horses is that it teaches the human to be a better horseman.
Liberty tests the honesty of our communication. You have to have a conversation with the horse and be aware of what and how you are asking along with being attuned to what the horse or pony is saying back.
My daughter is practicing feel and connection with her pony-but what she’s really learning is how to build a relationship with horses that will last a lifetime.
She’s learning to notice the small things. To feel when the horse is with her, recognize a try, adjust when there is confusion and understand that communication goes both ways.
These skills will follow her from this pony to every horse she sits on.
Before you can become good at telling a horse what to do,
you have to become good at listening to what the horse is telling you.
