Stella!! Al Hunt You Down is rounding the maternity corner.

Stella is a reserve congress champion and holds several roms in multiple events. She is in foal to Extremely Hot Chips due between February 23-March 5. This will be Stella’s first time carrying her foal. She has 2 foals via embryo transfer, a 2 yr old by Good Better Best and a yearling by Hot N Blazing.

DID YOU KNOW- - a mares gestation period averages around 340 days (about 11 months), but it's quite variable, typically ranging from 320 to 380 days, with factors like breed, s*x of the foal (colts often take longer), season, and mare's age affecting the length. While a normal pregnancy can fall within 320-365 days, premature foals born under 320 days often need special care, and very prolonged pregnancies (over 370 days) can sometimes signal issues like fescue toxicity. Stella is currently 297 days and we are counting down to day 320 to get into the “safe” window!

Thank you Rylee, Brie, Carly and Claire for her spa day and video!!

INDOOR RECESS!!

Due to the rapid weather changes, snow, ice, rain, mud, temperature swings we have been doing a lot of indoor turnout time.

It’s important to give our horses their “play time” on a consistent schedule. We try to turn out 3-4 days a week.

Play time can improve your horse's mental and physical health, even if your horse already gets frequent exercise under saddle. While we understand turnout involves some risk of injury, turnout time generally provides more benefits for our equine partners.

⬇️ POST some pictures or videos of your equine friends in the comments. We will share some more there too!

Blanket crud 🤢

Our horses wear blankets throughout the winter to keep a shorter hair coat. The shorter coat keeps the horse from sweating as much during rides, quicker drying time when the do sweat and allows us to keep showing throughout the winter.

Since our barn is not heated we can’t bathe as often as we would like to and they get what we call blanket crud🤢! In order to keep their coats healthy we use the VACUUM 🤩

Here is our routine:
1-deep curry-get in there and curry out all the crud, loose hair, dirt. It’s also like a massage for your horse!

2-Vacuum! Most horses are nervous about the vacuum at first so be sure to have someone help you and take your time. If you don’t have a vacuum, use a stiffer brush to get off the dirt and loose hair you just curried.

3-spray with a coat conditioner. We like Absorbine Santa Fe or Healthy Hair. Don’t forget to spray their manes and tails as well!

4-soft brush to get that shine. Carefully brush out the mane and tails.

5-pick hooves! Picking hooves is a daily, sometimes multiple times a day process! We can talk about why it’s important another time😉

6-wash or change blankets often. We thankfully have a washer and dryer at the barn!

Freezing temperatures, multiple clothing layers, ice falling off the roof, praying no one hurts themselves in turn out, changing blanketing-lots of blankets🫠, no sleep, trying to keep everyone happy, mud-so much mud…yes….yes it’s an addiction🙄

The snow ❄️ was beautiful but it was a cold windy day.

Our students enjoyed UnMounted Lessons today! We watched videos of their rides, used obscure props (spray bottles, pencils and an electric code🤷‍♀️) to map out the perfect circle and patterns, reviewed score sheets, learned how to tie the perfect knots, and mastering those tacking skills!

Riding Lessons are more than just riding!
