What Is Open Paw — And Why Does It Run Everything We Do?

If you’ve ever wondered why we do things a certain way here — why we hand-feed instead of using bowls, why every kennel run has a stuffed KONG in it, why cats get cardboard scratchers instead of just a litter box and a nap spot — the answer is almost always the same: Open Paw.

Open Paw is the training and behavior model that Halifax Humane Society is built on. Dr. Ian Dunbar and Kelly Gorman founded it in 2000 with one goal: to stop the cycle of animals being surrendered and then surrendered again after adoption by teaching them real manners and real coping skills while they’re still in our care.

The idea is simple but powerful. A dog or cat who spends weeks in a kennel with nothing to do doesn’t just sit there neutral — they get worse. They get louder, more anxious, more reactive to strangers, less housetrained. Open Paw flips that. Every single interaction we have with an animal — feeding, cleaning, walking, playing — is a chance to teach that animal to be calm, confident, and adoptable instead.

Open Paw is more than a training program. It is part of how we help prepare animals for life beyond the shelter, giving them the skills, confidence, and positive experiences that can support long-term adoption success.

Want to learn more about how Open Paw shapes the care we provide every day? Visit https://www.halifaxhumanesociety.org/open-paw/ to explore the program, or join us as a volunteer and become part of the hands-on work that helps reinforce these skills for the animals in our care.

From fearful to flourishing. Lanie’s transformation shows what can happen when an animal is given time, expertise, and a real chance to heal. 💙

When Lanie arrived as a stray in early February, she was overwhelmed and unsure. She would back away, growl, and avoid interaction, so our expert behavior team created a thoughtful behavior-shaping plan tailored to her needs.

Every step was intentional. Building trust slowly. Creating positive associations. Giving her the space to feel safe.

The biggest breakthrough came when Lanie was introduced to other dogs in the shelter. With their companionship, she became more confident, curious, and willing to engage with the world around her. Recognizing that progress, our team placed her in a foster home with multiple dogs where she could continue growing in a calm, supportive environment.

There, Lanie flourished.

She played with her foster siblings, explored her surroundings, and continued building confidence until she was finally ready for the next chapter.

Today, Lanie has been adopted into a loving home.

With only today and tomorrow left in 31 Days to End Cruelty, now is the time to help make more transformations like Lanie’s possible. Your support helps provide expert behavioral care, foster support, training, medical care, and the time vulnerable animals need to heal and move forward.

And right now, your gift can go twice as far. Donations can be matched dollar for dollar, up to $25,000.

Another week, another round of happy beginnings. 🏡❤️

There’s nothing quite like Gotcha Day! From the first walk out of the shelter to the first car ride home, every adoption marks the beginning of a brand-new chapter. This week, we had the joy of watching more dogs and cats leave Halifax Humane Society with the people who chose to make them part of their lives.

To every adopter who opened their heart and home, thank you. Because of you, another kennel is empty, another pet gets to experience the comfort of home, and space opens for the next animal who needs us.

And there are still so many wonderful pets waiting for their Gotcha Day. 🐾 If adoption has been on your mind, come meet them and see who might be waiting for you.

Every pet has been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and started on heartworm and flea prevention before going home.

Congratulations to all of this week’s adopters and adopted pets! Here’s to full food bowls, cozy beds, new adventures, and lots of love ahead. ❤️

Thirteen dogs arrived at Halifax Humane Society after being rescued through a U.S. Marshals Service seizure. They came to us needing safety, medical care, and the chance to finally begin again.

With support from the Asset Forfeiture Fund, each dog received a full physical examination, vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative medication, along with spay or neuter surgery before becoming available for adoption.

From there, our team gave them the patience, care, and stability they needed as they adjusted and prepared for what came next.

One by one, they began to move forward.

And eventually, all 13 found loving homes.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that when people and organizations come together, vulnerable animals can go from uncertainty to safety, from waiting to healing, and from rescue to home.

But there are always more animals who will need that same chance.

With only two days remaining in 31 Days to End Cruelty, now is the time to act. Your donation can be matched dollar for dollar, up to $25,000, doubling the impact of your gift for animals who arrive needing lifesaving care, shelter, recovery, and hope.

Help us finish strong and be ready for the next animal who needs us.

Fendi arrived in pain, frightened, and unable to put weight on her injured leg.

At just 2 years old, she was surrendered to Halifax Humane Society because of housing and insurance restrictions. During her examination, our expert veterinary team discovered extensive swelling in her left hind limb, multiple wounds, fleas, and a fractured femur.

In her kennel, Fendi trembled as our expert veterinary team worked quickly to determine how to relieve her pain and give her the best chance at a healthy future. After careful evaluation, the decision was made to amputate her injured leg.

That surgery became the beginning of her recovery.

With expert medical care, close monitoring, and time to heal, Fendi slowly grew stronger and more comfortable. Over the next month, she adjusted to life on three legs and prepared for the next chapter ahead.

Then came the moment everyone had been working toward: Fendi found a loving home.

As 31 Days to End Cruelty comes to an end, now is the time to make your gift go even further. Donations can be doubled, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000, helping provide twice the impact for animals who arrive needing lifesaving medical care, shelter, recovery time, and compassion.

UPDATE 8/28: Pressure has been adopted and is now in a loving home 🎉💙🫶🏼

100 days is long enough. Let’s get Pressure home today. 💙

For 100 days, Pressure has watched people walk through our doors hoping to meet their new best friend. At 6 years old, this fun-loving pup is still waiting for someone to realize just how much personality, joy, and love he has to offer.

Pressure has a big personality and an even bigger smile. He has successfully lived with other dogs, though he appreciates canine friends who understand that his toys are his treasures. He recently enjoyed a Dogs Day Out adventure and earned glowing reviews, showing everyone what a fantastic companion he can be outside the shelter.

Whether he’s flashing his adorable toothy grin, chatting with happy barks, or eagerly listening to his favorite people, Pressure is expressive, entertaining, and full of life.

And because Pressure has been with us for more than 30 days, his adoption fee is waived, and he will go home with a leash, collar, KONG, and bag of food.

Come meet Pressure in person at the Lohman Pet Adoption Center:
📍 2364 LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32124
🕛 Monday–Saturday | 12–6 p.m.

Or view his profile here:
https://www.halifaxhumanesociety.org/animal/pressure/

Not looking to adopt right now? You can still help Pressure get noticed. Like, comment, and share this post so his face reaches the person who may have been waiting for him, too.

Let’s make day 100 his last day waiting. 🐾

Now, only a few days remain to have your gift to Halifax Humane Society doubled up to $25,000 to help more animals recover from cruelty and neglect.
