📆💉An annual heartworm test for dogs is a quick, routine blood check that catches hidden parasite infections early.

We recommend annual testing using an antigen test and possibly a microfilariae (baby heartworm) test. Yearly testing matters in case you missed or delayed a monthly pill. Also, nothing is 100% perfect, testing ensures prevention 💊 meds are working!

Giving prevention drugs to an infected dog with microfilariae in the blood can cause a severe or fatal reaction. Testing can also find hidden heart and lung damage before the dog looks or acts sick.

Our vet will take a small amount of blood 🩸 from your dog's vein and checks the blood for proteins made by adult female heartworms. In certain circumstances, if the test is positive or if the vet wants to double-check, the blood sample can be viewed under a microscope to find tiny, moving baby worms.

🐶 Puppies under 7 months do not need a test right away because baby worms take 6 months to mature. They can start prevention and get tested at their next annual exam. Dogs over 7 months must be tested before starting prevention for the first time, and then once every year after that.

It’s 🐱kitten season! This little cutie, Dexter, visited us for his first wellness exam!

Kitten vaccinations 💉 typically begin around 6 weeks of age and are given in a series of boosters every few weeks until approximately 16 weeks of age.

This series is important because maternal antibodies passed from mom can interfere with a kitten’s immune response to vaccines early in life. 🩷

Vaccinations help protect kittens from serious and potentially life-threatening 🦠 diseases, including feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, panleukopenia, herpesvirus, and calicivirus.

A kitten’s first visit is also a great time to discuss:
✨ Deworming and parasite prevention
✨ Flea and tick prevention
✨ Testing for common infectious diseases
✨ Nutrition and proper growth
✨ Spay/neuter planning

Just a reminder—-there is road construction on 127 that is effecting traffic into the clinic- you might add a little extra time or find an alternative route. There are several easy back roads as alternatives instead of waiting at the light at the intersection of 127! We anticipate this to be resolved within just a few days.
