Ever wonder why they’re called the withers? 🐴

The name comes from the old English word withered, meaning “against the wind” or “resistance.” Fitting, since the withers are the highest point of a horse’s back and help stabilize movement and support the neck and shoulders.

They’re also super important for saddle fit, balance, and measuring a horse’s height. So while they may just look like a bony ridge behind the mane, the withers are kind of the horse’s architectural keystone.

Pre-Purchase Exams 🩺

In April 2026, The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) published the following guidelines for horse owners and soon-to-be horse owners to refer to when planning a pre-purchase exam for a horse:

1️⃣ Choose a veterinarian who is familiar with the breed, sport or use for which the horse is being purchased.

2️⃣ Explain to your veterinarian your expectations and primary uses for the horse, including short- and long-term goals (e.g., showing, then breeding).

3️⃣ Ask your veterinarian to outline the procedures that they feel should be included in the exam and why.

4️⃣ Establish the costs for these procedures.

5️⃣ Obtain a medical history for the horse and provide it to your veterinarian.

6️⃣ Be present during the purchase exam. The seller or agent should also be present.

7️⃣ Discuss with your veterinarian his or her findings in private.

8️⃣ Don’t be afraid to ask questions or request further information about your veterinarian’s findings in private.

Additionally, they advise that “the veterinarian’s job is neither to pass or fail an animal. Rather, it is to provide you with information regarding any existing medical problems and to discuss those problems with you so that you can make an informed purchase decision.” –AAEP
