Vertical Farm Update: The Socrates Seedless Cucumber
Taking a walk through the rows today and the Socrates cucumbers are looking incredible. These are a greenhouse favorite for a reason. They are a parthenocarpic variety which means they are completely seedless and do not require bees for pollination. That makes them perfect for our controlled environment.
We grow these using a vertical gravity fed aeroponic system. Instead of using high-pressure misters that can clog, we let nutrient-rich water flow down from the top of the towers. This trickles over the root systems and gives the plants exactly what they need while pulling in plenty of oxygen. It is an efficient, low-maintenance way to get these cucumbers to reach their full potential.
Socrates is known for being thin-skinned, sweet, and burpless. Since we grow them off the ground and away from the dirt, they stay clean, crisp, and ready to eat right off the vine.

Morning from the Mueller Farmers Market! The sun is finally out and we have the table loaded down with some of the best looking produce we have seen all season. We brought a mountain of those deep red, ribbed heirloom tomatoes that are just begging to be sliced up for a sandwich. If you have been waiting for the perfect tomato, today is definitely your day.
The rest of the harvest is looking just as good, from the crisp romaine to the big bunches of parsley and basil. You might even see a few of our ladybugs hanging out on the leaves if you look close. They are our natural pest control and the main reason we can keep everything clean and chemical free for your family. We also have plenty of spinach and greens that are fresh enough to stay crisp in the fridge for a good two weeks.
We are all geared up and ready to go, so come on by the booth to grab your groceries and say hello. We will be out here at Mueller until 2pm, so dont wait too long to come see us. See y'all soon!

🍅 Giving the Girls a Trim: Science Meets the Water ✂️
Ever feel like your garden is starting to hug you back? Our tomato vines were getting a little too cozy, so I spent the morning doing some much-needed canopy management.
It might feel a little heartless to snip off those beautiful green leaves, but there is some cool plant biology happening here. As a vine grows, the lower, older leaves actually become carbon sinks. This means they are consuming more energy through respiration than they are producing through photosynthesis. 📉
By giving them a haircut, we are essentially re-routing the plant’s internal plumbing!
Here is the science behind the snip:
Sugar Loading — By removing excess foliage, we stop the plant from wasting resources. Instead, it directs those concentrated sugars straight into the fruit, which is exactly how we get that incredible, sweet flavor.
Apical Dominance — Pruning the suckers encourages the plant to put its hormones and nutrients into the main fruit clusters rather than side-branching into a leafy mess.
The Microclimate Factor — Dense leaves trap a layer of still, humid air called the boundary layer. Breaking that up with a trim prevents fungal spores from moving in and making themselves at home.
Photomorphogenesis — Getting light deeper into the plant structure triggers better fruit development and keeps the whole system balanced.
A happy plant is a productive plant! If you are growing at home, do not be afraid to clear out the basement of your vines. Your harvest will thank you! 🌿🍅

Biological Warfare in the Greenhouse 🐞
We recently faced a massive aphid infestation on our vertical cucumber crops. If you’ve ever grown cucurbits, you know how fast these sap-suckers can cause a systemic decline—curling leaves, stunted growth, and that sticky honeydew that invites sooty mold.

Instead of reaching for a chemical spray that would disrupt our ecosystem, we deployed the "heavy artillery": Hippodamia convergens (Convergent Lady Beetles) 38,000 of them to be exact. We will be releasing another 18,000 later today, and 18,000 next week to make sure all aphids are consumed and removed from the greenhouse.

The Science of the Sweep
Predatory Efficiency: A single ladybug can consume up to 50 aphids a day.

Life Cycle Control: Beyond the adults, we’re looking for them to lay eggs. Ladybug larvae are even more voracious, often referred to as "aphid lions" for the way they tear through colonies.

Targeted Response: Unlike broad-spectrum treatments, these beetles seek out the highest concentrations of prey, cleaning up the undersides of leaves that are hard to reach with manual methods.

Aiding the Recovery
While our tiny apex predators handled the biological threat, we stepped in with some "surgical" support. We’ve pruned and cleared away the dying leaves to give the plants immediate relief. By removing this damaged tissue, we’re:

Redirecting Energy: Helping the plant funnel its resources into fresh, new growth rather than trying to sustain failing leaves.

Improving Airflow: Opening up the vertical canopy to boost CO2 exchange and light pe*******on.

Sanitation: Eliminating the honeydew-soaked foliage before sooty mold can take hold.

The Results?
Total knockout. In just a short window, the aphid pressure has plummeted, and the cucumbers are finally rebounding with a vengeance. It’s a perfect reminder that when you lean into Integrated Pest Management (IPM), nature usually has the best solution already engineered.
