At Vivavets Animal Hospital, we are honored to support the military families who serve our country every day. 🇺🇸🐾

Whether you are moving to Maryland, preparing for travel with your pets, or need urgent veterinary support, our team is here to help make the process easier for you and your furry family members.

To all military families coming to our community — welcome to Maryland. We are grateful for your service and proud to be a trusted partner in your pets’ care.

Today our team participated in an in-house CPR training led by one of our incredibly experienced technician, Joselyn. Continuing education and preparedness are so important to us, and today was all about making sure we’re ready to respond confidently in an emergency.

We reviewed the differences between Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), practiced proper patient positioning based on chest size and conformation, discussed how to interpret ECG readings, and worked hands-on with the defibrillator. Every detail matters when seconds count.

With years of ER experience, Joselyn was the perfect person to lead this mock code. Her knowledge and leadership helped ensure that our entire team is on the same page, communicating clearly, and working efficiently together when it matters most.

We train together so that in a real emergency, we can act quickly, cohesively, and with confidence. Your pets deserve a team that is prepared, skilled, and ready! That’s exactly what we strive to be every single day.

Yes ! We’re seeing a rise in pets getting into ma*****na and other recreational substances—and it’s more serious than many people think.
At VivaVets Urgent Care, these cases are becoming all too common.
Know the signs: wobbling, extreme sleepiness, drooling, vomiting, or unusual behavior.
Prevention matters: keep all substances safely stored and out of reach. Discard carefully - pets can dig !
If it happens: we are all human — honesty with your vet is critical. We’re here to help, not judge—and fast, accurate info helps us treat your pet quickly.
If something feels off, trust your gut and act fast.
Call VivaVets at 443-542-2938 right away—we’re here for them with you !! 🐾🐾

As ma*****na use increases in the U.S. and more states legalize the drug, veterinary clinics are seeing a big uptick in pets with cannabis toxicity. MORE BELOW ⬇️

🐝 “Oh no… my pet got stung by a bee!” 🐶🐱
It happens fast. One curious sniff… one playful paw… and suddenly your sweet pup or kitty is yelping and licking their face.
At VivaVets Animal Hospital, we see this more often than you think — especially in spring and summer here in Columbia.
The good news?
Most bee stings cause mild pain and swelling, usually around the face or paws. But knowing what to do in the moment makes all the difference.
💛 If your pet gets stung:
• Stay calm — your pet will feed off your energy
• Move them somewhere quiet and safe
• If you see a stinger, gently scrape it out (don’t squeeze it)
• Apply a cold compress to help with swelling
• Watch closely for the next 24 hours
🚨 Call us immediately if you notice:
• Trouble breathing
• Rapid or severe facial swelling
• Vomiting or collapse
• Pale gums, weakness, or unusual behavior
These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction, and that’s an emergency.
Even if it seems mild, we’re always happy to guide you. Sometimes a quick call gives you peace of mind — and that matters.

Hammer’s “Home Makeover” Mishap 🐾
Hammer, a 9-year-old Labrador, decided to sample some bedding at home and ended up eating a significant amount of stuffing.
He was brought in on emergency after his family realized what had happened. Bedding material can quickly move from the stomach into the intestines and cause a dangerous obstruction.
After evaluation, emergency surgery was recommended. Endoscopy was discussed, but due to the quantity and nature of the material, surgery was the safest and most definitive option.
We successfully removed all of the stuffing before it could move further and create a more serious blockage.
Hammer’s family did an excellent job with post-operative care, which is just as important as the procedure itself.
We’re happy to report he’s back to his cheerful self and ready for walks again & just in time to work on that “summer body” (without the bedding this time!

Cats hide illness. Until they can’t.
By the time you notice something is wrong -
it often is urgent.
At Vivavets, we provide focused feline urgent care:
- Not eating for 24+ hours
- Increased frequency of urination
- Sudden lethargy
- Vomiting repeatedly
- Trauma or injury
Our role is simple:
Triage. Stabilize. Support.
And transfer to ER when advanced care is needed.
Emergencies are stressful — especially with cats.
We prioritize calm handling, clear communication, and fast assessment.
If your cat seems “off,” trust your instinct.
Earlier is always better than later.
