Kimani has been a Veterinary Assistant with the VivaVets team for the past 3 months, bringing experience in general practice, primary care, emergency medicine, and now urgent care. She holds a B.A. in Prevet Medicine and is currently working toward her Veterinary Technician certification.

One of Kimani’s favorite parts about working at VivaVets is learning new treatments for cases she didn’t often see in general practice. She enjoys expanding her knowledge every day while helping provide compassionate care to our patients.

When she’s not at the hospital, Kimani enjoys learning new languages, writing poetry, playing the piano and guitar, and spending time with her cat, Safari Rain.

We’re so happy to have Kimani as part of the VivaVets team!

Great opportunity 🐾🐾

This is your reminder that even your dog’s favorite toy can become a medical emergency.

One minute this pup was happily playing with his stuffed toy... the next, he had swallowed one of its legs.

Thankfully, his mom acted quickly and brought him straight to VivaVets. We were able to safely induce vomiting, and the toy leg came right back up before it had the chance to become a life-threatening intestinal blockage.

Stuffed toys are a great source of enrichment, but loose pieces like legs, squeakers, eyes, and stuffing can become dangerous if swallowed. Once a foreign object moves into the intestines, it can lead to an obstruction that may require emergency surgery.

If you think your pet has swallowed something they shouldn’t, don’t wait to see what happens. The sooner they’re evaluated, the more treatment options we have. In some cases, we can avoid surgery altogether.

Poor guy just couldn’t stop shaking his head🐶

This senior Lab came to VivaVets with a large ear hematoma caused by an underlying ear infection. His ear was painful, swollen, and making him pretty uncomfortable.

We treated the infection, placed a drain to help relieve the pressure, and got him started on the road to recovery.

And while he’s still rocking his bandage, he’s already feeling much more comfortable than when he first walked through our doors.

Moments like this are why we do what we do.

Today our team participated in an in-house CPR training led by one of our incredibly experienced technician, Joselyn. Continuing education and preparedness are so important to us, and today was all about making sure we’re ready to respond confidently in an emergency.

We reviewed the differences between Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), practiced proper patient positioning based on chest size and conformation, discussed how to interpret ECG readings, and worked hands-on with the defibrillator. Every detail matters when seconds count.

With years of ER experience, Joselyn was the perfect person to lead this mock code. Her knowledge and leadership helped ensure that our entire team is on the same page, communicating clearly, and working efficiently together when it matters most.

We train together so that in a real emergency, we can act quickly, cohesively, and with confidence. Your pets deserve a team that is prepared, skilled, and ready! That’s exactly what we strive to be every single day.

🐾 FOUND DOG – PLEASE SHARE 🐾

This sweet little girl was brought into our hospital today by a Good Samaritan after being found near National Business Parkway & Route 175 in the Jessup/Anne Arundel County area.

She was seen for a wellness exam and does not have a microchip. She is believed to be geriatric, weighs just 3.7 pounds, and most of her teeth are missing. She is currently safe and being cared for by the Good Samaritan who found her.

If you recognize her or believe she may be yours, please call VivaVets Animal Hospital in Columbia at 443-542-2938. She will be under the care of Anne Arundel County Animal Shelter the morning of May 9th, please contact them at (410) 222-3919.

Yes ! We’re seeing a rise in pets getting into ma*****na and other recreational substances—and it’s more serious than many people think.
At VivaVets Urgent Care, these cases are becoming all too common.
Know the signs: wobbling, extreme sleepiness, drooling, vomiting, or unusual behavior.
Prevention matters: keep all substances safely stored and out of reach. Discard carefully - pets can dig !
If it happens: we are all human — honesty with your vet is critical. We’re here to help, not judge—and fast, accurate info helps us treat your pet quickly.
