PET OWNER ALERT!
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCREWWORM!

You may have seen recent national news about federal officials confirming cases of the New World Screwworm (NWS) in southern states for the first time since 1966. While there are no cases in Michigan, health officials across the country are urging pet (and livestock) owners to stay vigilant. Because animals move easily across state lines for travel, adoption, or other reasons, early awareness is our best defense!

WHAT IS NEW WORLD SCREWWORM?
Unlike common fly maggots that only feed on dead tissue, New World Screwworm larvae (maggots) actually feed on living flesh. Adult female flies are attracted to warm-blooded animals and lay eggs in open wounds, sores, or even minor scratches. Once hatched, the larvae burrow deep into the healthy tissue, which can cause severe injury and can be fatal if left untreated.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
-Wounds that won't heal
-Foul odor or bleeding
-Visible maggots or flies
-Signs of pain, agitation, severe scratching/licking, lethargy, and/or loss of appetite.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PET
-Keep Wounds Clean and Covered
-Inspect for Scratches or Cuts After Outdoor Activity
-Report Suspicious Wounds Immediately.

Screwworm infestations are highly treatable when caught early!

Your pet's safety is our top priority. If you have any questions about wound care or pest prevention, please don't hesitate to give our clinic a call- (248) 288-1100!

Pet owners may be diligent about routine care, but even a minor wound can put animals at risk for dangerous parasites. One parasite that poses a potential threat is the New World screwworm (NWS), a parasitic fly whose larvae infest wounds and can result in significant tissue damage if left untreated...
