☀️🐾 Hot Weather Safety for Pets 🐾☀️

The temperatures are rising, and while we can cool off with air conditioning and cold drinks, our pets rely on us to keep them safe and comfortable. Heat can become dangerous for pets very quickly—sometimes in just minutes.

Here are some important warm-weather reminders:

🌡️ Never leave pets in a parked car
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can become life-threatening fast.

💧 Fresh water & shade are a must
Make sure your pets always have access to clean water and a cool, shaded area when outdoors.

🐕 Walk during cooler hours
Early mornings and late evenings are safest. Hot pavement can burn paw pads—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

🏠 Keep indoor pets cool too
Fans, AC, cooling mats, and avoiding strenuous play during peak heat can make a big difference.

🚨 Know the signs of heatstroke
Heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, or collapse are emergencies. If you notice these signs, seek veterinary care immediately.

Let’s work together to keep our furry family members safe and comfortable all summer long. ❤️🐾

Fun Fact, house cats and tigers share an astonishing 95.6% of their DNA, making them distant genetic cousins.

Both species belong to the same biological family, Felidae. This deep genetic link explains why your furry little couch potato shares so many physical and behavioral traits with the jungle's largest predator:

🐈 Hunting Instincts: Cats and tigers share the exact same predatory sequence: stalking, pouncing, and ambushing prey.

🐈 Physical Adaptations: Both have sharp, retractable claws, specialized teeth, and highly developed whiskers.

🐈 Body Language: From slow-blinking to show trust to flattening their ears when annoyed, they use similar body language and vocalizations.

🐈 Territorial Behavior: House cats scratch furniture for the same reason tigers scratch trees—to mark their territory.

While they share the vast majority of their genome due to a common ancestor that roamed the earth over 10 million years ago, that remaining 4.5% of differing DNA is what dictates their size, metabolism, and temperament

🐾 The Myth:
One human year equals exactly seven dog years.

🐾 The Truth:
Aging in dogs actually depends heavily on their breed and size.

🐶 Smaller breeds usually live longer and age more slowly.
🐕 Larger breeds tend to mature faster and may age more quickly.

For example, a 1-year-old dog is often already similar to a human teenager — not a 7-year-old child!

Every pet ages uniquely, which is why regular wellness exams are so important to help them stay healthy through every stage of life.

🐾 The Myth:
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

🐾 The Truth:
Dogs of any age can learn new skills, commands, and behaviors.

In fact, older dogs often have an advantage—they tend to be calmer, more patient, and better able to focus compared to energetic puppies.
Training isn’t just for the young—it’s a great way to:
🐾 Keep your dog mentally stimulated
🐾 Strengthen your bond
🐾 Build confidence at any age
Whether it’s basic commands, fun tricks, or even new routines, your senior dog is absolutely capable of learning something new 💕
It’s never too late to teach—and never too late to learn!

It’s Veterinary Receptionist Week! Carol & Nikki work hard every day as the “face” of our hospital, always serving smiles while juggling high-pressure phone calls, appointments, and triages (to name a few of the many tasks they do). We wouldn’t be able to serve you the way we do without them! 🩵

Help us in wishing these two a happy Veterinary Receptionist Week by sharing your gratitude and favorite stories with them in the comments!
