We received this email message regarding American Animal Hospital Association accreditation:
“ Sharing good news – unsure if you have received documentation of this yet.
We are about to renew our AAHA accreditation and were sent the following update as a new standard:
“SX44 Feline Declawing (Onychectomy): Practices should not perform or refer clients for declaw procedures when done in a nontherapeutic capacity. This procedure should be avoided unless there is a medical necessity. Alternatives may include nail caps, frequent nail trimming, and behavior modification. Examples of therapeutic use include tumor excision, traumatic injury, and tissue necrosis.”
Hooray!
Practice Manager”
It might sound better than it is at first reading…unfortunately, though, this is a VOLUNTARY standard. We will continue to report. If you are interested in learning more, you may want to check out City the Kitty’s page.
