*Second Annual Janet L.B Duesler Scholarship Essay contest*
In 1982 my grandma, Janet Duesler, founded our herd, Hackmatack LaMancha. The first doe she bought was a registered Lamancha named R4 Acres V Evelyn. As unbelievable as it sounds every doe in our herd can be traced directly back to Evelyn. Grandma Janet had a dedicated passion for improving the LaMancha breed as a whole and spent countless hours seeking out top quality LaMancha genetics. The qualities she valued most were longevity, excellent milk production over a lifetime, and success in the show ring. As a pioneering dairy goat farmer in the 1980’s, goat vets were few and far between. Consequently, Grandma Janet researched and successfully practiced conventional and holistic treatments. The phrase “cull until you cry” could possibly have been invented by Janet Duesler herself. If not the phrase, then the concept itself. She had a very select herd and kept only the best does born on the farm. In this way, she continued to improve her herd and contribute to the development of the LaMancha breed. Sadly, she passed away in 2009 after a long battle with cancer. In honor of her, we are holding a youth essay scholarship contest. We would like the scholarship to go to someone who embodies the same qualities and goals for their herd as she did. Through this scholarship we want to encourage young dairy goat farmers to use the animal they purchase from us to improve their herd and the LaMancha breed as a whole. The winner will receive 50% off of a gorgeous doe kid born 5/19/23.
