This week we had the sweetest patient remind us of the effects of heartworm disease, the importance of testing, and need for year-round prevention. As if the weeks on multiple oral medications, hospital visits, and blood tests were bad enough- the required months of activity restriction could be considered torturous on the heals of a Chicago summer! 😭 BUT this is all necessary and part of our protocol to minimize stress on the heart and prevent life-threatening complications such as heart failure and stroke (due to thromboembolism of dead worms).🙏🐶❤️

Parasitic worms (spread by the bite of an infected mosquito) that can live in the bloodstream, grow to be a foot-long, and lodge in one of the heart’s major arteries.
