Even if your cat is indoors only, it's important to have some of these summer safety tips in mind.

Always have fresh water available; if your cat goes outdoors, or if you care for feral cats you can add ice cubes to keep them cool.

If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, keep a fan and shady spots available for your cat. The best rule of thumb is that if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your cat.

Now that the weather is finally nice (finally!) Garetto is here with some window safety tips.

Limit the size of the window opening. Open windows no more than 1-2 inches.
Always make sure to check the screen before you leave the window open. Check that the screen fits securely in the window frame, and check that the mesh is secure. Mesh can rot or fall out of the frame over time.
If you want to open windows further than 1-2 inches, consider investing in a screen guard. There are multiple options for screen guards-from aluminum mesh to guards designed to keep children from falling out of windows. If using a guard, make sure there is limited room around the sides so cats can't get behind the guard.
Always supervise your cat and open windows. If you have to leave the house, make sure to limit the size of the opening.

Why is window safety important? First, because cat's don't always land on their feet. And you want to keep your indoor cat indoors. One of our patients managed to push his way through a screen window when trying to pounce on a bird outside. The owner came home to find her cat wandering the backyard.
