🦟 Let’s Talk About Heartworm Disease 🐶💔
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition caused by a parasite that’s spread through mosquito bites. Unfortunately, it’s found in all 50 states — yes, even here — and can affect dogs of any age, size, or breed.
Here’s how it works: when a mosquito bites an infected dog, it picks up immature heartworm larvae. Those larvae are then passed to another dog through the mosquito’s next bite. Over time, the larvae grow into adult worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing permanent damage to these vital organs. 😞
👉 Signs of heartworm disease don’t usually show up right away. But as it progresses, you might notice:
• A soft, dry cough
• Shortness of breath
• Fatigue, even with mild activity
• Fainting or disorientation after exercise
Sadly, these symptoms often appear after significant damage has already been done.
🩺 That’s why we recommend yearly heartworm testing and keeping your dog on a monthly, year-round preventive. Preventing heartworm is much easier, safer, and more affordable than treating it once it develops.
