💔 FIP. Three letters that can scare every kitten rescuer to their core.

Meet Oak 🩵 Our most recent FIP fighter

If you’ve been around rescue for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard of FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). For years, a FIP diagnosis was considered a heartbreaking death sentence, especially for kittens.

But thankfully, things have changed. ❤️‍🩹

FIP is caused by a mutation of feline coronavirus. Coronavirus itself is extremely common in cats, particularly in environments with multiple cats and kittens. Most cats exposed to feline coronavirus do not develop FIP.

In a small percentage of cats, however, the virus can mutate inside the body and lead to FIP. It can affect young kittens and cats, and the symptoms can sometimes look like many other illnesses, making diagnosis complicated.

🚩 Possible signs of FIP include:
Loss of appetite
Weight loss or failure to gain weight
Persistent fever
Extreme lethargy
Swollen abdomen from fluid buildup
Difficulty breathing
Eye changes
Neurological symptoms

But here is the good news!

FIP IS NO LONGER AUTOMATICALLY A DEATH SENTENCE. ❤️

Antiviral treatments have dramatically changed the outlook for many cats diagnosed with FIP!

2 weeks ago Oak was found along a wood pile, in the middle of nowhere, barely wanting to move. The worst part- Oak had clean ears and zero fleas on him. Sadly we believe he was dumped (Stop dumping cats!). Janelle immediately started Oak on all things high quality. This included the mama and baby Royal Canine, Tiki Baby, and Tiki Thrive (Thank you Donators!!). Within 2 days he was showing slow improvement but his breathing was still off. This prompted Kristina to reach out to Mechanicsburg to schedule an appt.

After several tests, Dr Samko decided it was time to start Oak on FIP medication. Since then he has improved leaps and bounds 😻

We are so thankful to the finder for not leaving Oak to die a slow and painful death, and Dr. Samko for fitting him into her busy clinic schedule.

And a big shout out to Vet Tech Kira for adding a note to our vet paperwork telling us to not freak out and everything will be okay! Because let’s be honest! We totally freaked out 🫠

If you could say a prayer or send positive vibes for sweet Oak, we would so very much appreciate it! He will be up for adoption once he gets the all clear from Dr Samko 💫

Be sure to check back for Oak updates as we are sure you will fall in love with him as quickly as we did! We promise you, there is something very special about this kid and we know when he beats this, he’ll have the perfect family waiting for him!

Rescue never stops. ⏳

We are always transparent with our SAF Family, and sometimes being transparent means being honest with ourselves and with you.

We are tired. Like, really tired. 😴

This morning, we woke up knowing it was going to be another busy day. We started with releasing feral cats back to their colonies, then stopped at the car wash to pressure wash carriers and traps. Oh and let’s not forget setting up a dumped family of cats into their acclimation crate at their new farm home (Stop dumping cats!!)

Four hours later, we’re finally wrapping up and we still have weekend chores waiting at home before another work week begins.

We aren’t telling you this to whine. We volunteer because we want to. We love helping caretakers and colony cats, we believe in this work, and we will continue showing up for them.

But we also know that we can’t pour from an empty cup. ❤️

So, this evening and into the week, we are taking a much needed mental holiday. 🌴🧠

That means:

🐾 Intake is CLOSED
📩 Message responses will be delayed
❤️ Our volunteers will be spending much-needed time with their spouses and families

😴 We are going to rest, recharge, and reset

Rescue will still be here when we come back. The cats will still need us. The messages will still be waiting.

And we’ll be ready to tackle it all again! But for now, we need to breathe.

Thank you for understanding, supporting us, and being part of our SAF Family. ❤️

Rest isn’t quitting. Rest is how we keep going. 🐾

Tomorrow's another massive day for us!!

☆ 20+ cats will go to the TNR clinic 🐈

☆ We continue to chip away at our waitlist and navigate the urgent requests we field daily 😞

Janelle and I are dragging 😴 its been a wild week with unexpected situations...more on that another day.

Here's to getting ferals settled at the rescue, tagged, paperwork done, and doing some last minute cleaning!

Looking forward to making it to the other side of this hellish week!

Happy Friday 😊

☆ Currently seeking barn placement ☆

👉 We are assisting a family who recently discovered a mother cat and 3 kittens in their wood shed. Legit, their property is under surveillance and this family literally showed up out of nowhere last Sunday!

👉 They've asked multiple neighbors and nobody is feeding them and/or has claimed them. We truly believe mom may have been dumped when pregnant (theyre beside a vet office).

👉 Unfortunately, the family has several children who are SEVERELY allergic (think multiple daily meds and allergy shots) to cats.

👉 In addition, the house is directly off two MAJOR roads with stores/gas stations/restaurants all nearby. We have serious concerns about their safety.

🎯 Mother cat and kittens will be fixed and vaccinated before placement. We do require they go in at least pairs and barn homes must commit to at least a 2 week acclimation period.

I believe 🙏 the family will be semi-friendly, maybe even friendly, once I get hands on them.

We unfortunately have no open foster or quarantine space to intake...so we are trying to do the next best thing for both kitties and the family who asked for help ♡ cute video of kittens in comments!

Kira's big boy, Poe, takes his foster dad status really seriously ;)

👉 He plays a HUGE role in helping the little ones feel safe in foster!

👉 He makes sure they understand all the household rules...like staring intently at the humans and meowing loudly if the food dish is even remotely below half way full!

👉 He ensures theyre clean - darn kids dont understand the importance of cleanliness yet ;)

👉 He makes sure they know humans give the best love ♡

We are grateful to all our foster families and their pets who also play BIG important 🎯 roles in creating amazing kitties 😸

The "Littles" have been a fun group for Kira and her family - they came to us in rough shape, high parasite loads, eyes popping out and much more! With lots of TLC, high quality food, and vetting - theyre ready to find their forever families soon ♡

As we get organized for another TNR week, we realized something… and honestly, it has us a little worried…..

Our TNR waitlist is now so long that appointments are easily stretching into March 2027. 🫣

Worried? We are too. But are you asking yourself what YOU can do to be proactive? We sure hope so! ❤️

If you see a feral cat, please don’t assume someone else will help it. You are seeing that cat for a reason. YOU can be the person who makes a difference for that one cat.

🙀 See a pregnant feral female?
Please don’t wait. A spay/abort can prevent another litter from being born into an already overwhelmed rescue system. Rescues everywhere are overflowing, and kittens born outside face an incredibly difficult life, especially with cold weather approaching.

🫶🏻 Need to borrow a trap?
Reach out to a local rescue or TNR group. Many would be thrilled to help you help one cat and will gladly loan a trap as long as it is returned. We will even throw in a p*e pad to protect your car during transport!

🐾 Need to schedule a TNR appointment?
You can make an appointment with The Nobody’s Cats Foundation here: https://www.nobodyscats.org/schedule-s-n-appointment

We are ALL tired. 😴 Rescue is exhausting, and the need never seems to stop.

But here’s the thing…

You helping the one cat you see in your neighborhood, at your workplace, or in a park can be a HUGE deal. 🩵

One cat becomes two. Two become ten. And before you know it, an entire colony is born. So please… don’t wait for someone else to step in. Be the someone. 🤞🏻

Millie is still looking for a home to call her own. 💔

This morning, her BFF Cookie left for her forever home, and now Millie is wondering if an application will ever come in asking to meet her. 🥺

Even though Millie approved of Cookie, she’s definitely picky about who she lets into her inner circle!

Millie is a playfully affectionate, devoted, human-centric girl who thrives brightest as your one-and-only cat. She wants to be your girl, and she has so much love to give. ❤️

Estimated to be about 1.5 years old and currently fostered in Carlisle.

🍀 Interested in meeting Millie? Please send us a message with your email address and we will send an adoption application.

Please share Miss Millie. 🙏 You never know who might be looking for a best friend just like her!

Do you know what we LOVE?! ❤️

Saving a feral mama and her babies from a downtown window well, earning her trust, and watching that trust lead to a happily ever after. 🥹

What’s the happily ever after you ask?! Mama and one of her babies were adopted TOGETHER!

Happy forever home to the Bulldog Litter Mama! We couldn’t be happier knowing she gets to spend the rest of her life safe, loved, and with one of her babies by her side. 🍀

Big hugs to Foster Sarah 💜 Great work!

We are SO incredibly thankful for every person who chooses to adopt and doesn’t shop. Your decision changes lives!

And to everyone who has sent us an adoption application over the last few days, THANK YOU! We promise we are working through them and will be in contact soon. We appreciate your patience and understanding more than you know!
