This raccoon had quite the ordeal after getting a plastic container stuck on his head! After spending over a week unable to free himself, a kind community member reached out to us for help.
She had been trying to assist him herself, but this clever raccoon was determined to avoid her rescue attempts. Thankfully, the container had a small hole that allowed him to breathe, and she was able to provide access to water and food in deep dishes. He had learned to submerge the container in the food and water so he could still eat and drink.
It’s incredible to think about how well this raccoon adapted to such a difficult situation. Wildlife are amazingly resilient, but despite his efforts, the container definitely needed to come off quickly.
Thankfully, he returned on day two of our capture efforts, allowing us to safely locate and net him. Our wonderful friends at Summit Veterinary Hospital were kind enough to meet us at nearly midnight to help remove the container and give him the care he needed.
After removal, he received his vaccinations and, despite everything he had been through, this resilient little raccoon made a full recovery and was released back where he belongs.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in helping this raccoon get a second chance. This story is also an important reminder to properly dispose of containers and litter! Something as simple as a discarded item can quickly become life-threatening for wildlife. This raccoon would have died if not for the assistance of the person who found him or our capture efforts
