Conrad, president of Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech), 1882-86, who was an ex

pert horseman. The unit, which was disbanded and then re-established in the late 1990s. As of 2019, the troop rides and trains at the Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena and Paris Mountain in Blacksburg, Virginia. Our goal as an organization is to become a cohesive mounted cavalry unit representing the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, and its values, proudly.

"Sandy graduated from Virginia Tech in 1985 and was in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. She holds Master’s degrees in Finance (Cal State) and Banking Administration (University of Washington). After a corporate career that included KPMG, Bank of America, Microsoft and Expedia, she has traveled the world providing healing and bodywork services to the equestrian community. She works on horses and riders in all equestrian sports, from beginner through Olympic levels. She also teaches classes in anatomy, nutrition, equine dissections, behavior/training and various modalities of bodywork. She has been collecting and studying skeletons for many years and has a group of “teachers” (skeletons ranging in age from 8 months old through 29 years old) to help students understand how to optimize their horse’s performance and health. Sandy now resides in Pilot Mountain, NC and comes to Virginia Tech frequently to volunteer and serve on alumni committees."

September 29th, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets held their annual Corps Fest, an opportunity for freshmen and sophomore cadets to learn about different organizations that the Corps has to offer.
We had a great turnout, and are very grateful we were permitted to bring Ash the horse onto Upper Quad to show interested cadets even more of what we're about!

This weekend, Conrad Cavalry held our first Troop Training of the semester at the barn. Troop Training allows for unit cohesion and morale as we work together to learn and improve upon skills, conduct large group lessons, and discuss plans.

This week, we focused on reviewing the basics: handling safety, proper grooming and tacking techniques, and tack maintenance. During lessons, some members even got extra balance and core workouts learning how to ride without a saddle! We are looking forward to an amazing year filled with growth and furthering our community connectivity!

Big thank you to our host and instructor, Rose Lafferty (Wild Irish Rose Equestrian Center) and her amazing horses!
