Did you know that for horses at high risk for skin cancer, most fly masks don't provide sufficient UV protection?

When Christie Goddard '16 noticed some fast-growing lumps on her 16-year-old horse, she knew she had to act fast. Rowdy was seen by Equine Field Services and then referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The good news? Dr. Renata Ramos and her team used surgery and an advanced photodynamic therapy to treat Rowdy and save his eye.

Berkley the German shepherd mystified many veterinarians, but a visit to the Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital shed light on Berkley's condition—or, rather, conditions.

At a July re-check, Berkley's condition was pronounced as “great” with previous lesions healed.

We're proud of our dual-degree veterinary and public health students who partnered with the Health Wagon and supervising veterinarians to bring essential care to pets in Southwest Virginia.

They provided over $73,000 in services to 566 animals, learning how to apply the "One Health" concept—which recognizes that human, animal, and environmental health are all interconnected—in a real-world setting.

As students completed their Integrative Learning Experience summer project, 566 animals received care, 343 cats and 223 dogs over two days.
