It has been over two weeks since the devastating fire in downtown Bellingham, which destroyed the 117 year-old “Spokane” building and feed mill where Hohl Feed and Seed operated for more than 80 years. After such a huge loss, we still have so much to be grateful for. We are grateful no one was injured in the fire. We are grateful to the Bellingham Fire Department. We are grateful most of the animals were saved. We are grateful to the Whatcom Humane Society, who sheltered many of the animals after the fire and to everyone who adopted them. We are grateful to Avellino Coffee House for sheltering us, the employees, and critters from the biting cold during the fire. We are grateful to the owners of D'Anna's Cafe Italiano for capturing images on their security camera of the perpetrator who started the fire. We are grateful to those who called in tips, leading to the arrest and sentencing of the person responsible. We are grateful to the community of shopkeepers who reached out to offer jobs to the staff of Hohl Feed. A senseless act destroyed a historical building and long-time family business, but the community’s support and kindness has meant so much to us afterwards. We are grateful to all of you.
Lastly, we are grateful to Freddy G Photography for this devastating, yet strikingly beautiful photo of what is left of the Hohl Feed and Seed building and Bird Ally.
